The Sufi Doctrine

Gonjasufi
From: San Diego, California, United States

Gonjasufi
Last year the sound of Gonjasufi swept in from the oppressive the void of the Californian desert like a call to prayer for the jaded indie kids. A groundbreaking combination of well travelled psychedelia, street beats and Persian mysticism the Gonjasufi sound is a haunting, atmospheric, quasi religious experience. One listen and your world will change forever.

Just in time to brighten up the first day of your working week I've managed to get my hands on a brilliant remix of Parisian electro terrorists We Are Enfant Terrible's new track ‘Wild Child’. Doing their bit for Anglo French relations East London dance popsters Chew Lips give it a unique twist.

Its released on Dec 6th on Last Gang Entertainment (Crystal Castle’s, MSTRKRFT & Death From Above’s home label). Their new EP ‘Wild Fish’ is out on January 17th, which includes the Chew Lips remix as well as four original tracks. So todays track is a little sneak preview of things to come!

Love Is All You Need

LoveLikeFireLoveLikeFire
From: San Francisco, United States

'Dust', the new album from San Franciscans LoveLikeFire (spaces are like so last year darlink), could have been recorded in England anytime between the winter of 1986 and the summer of 2009. It is a stunning blend of the retro rock of 'Porcupine' era Echo & The Bunnymen with the modern snaps and glitches of the xx. It manages to be both retro and on trend which is a difficult trick to pull off. The percussive drive and minor guitars inhale with a loosely industrial groove and exhale with lead singer Ann Yu’s captivating vocals and literate lyrics. It's a quite stunning album that will enthrall, mesmerize and entrance anyone within listening distance.

And finally a word of advice from Doctor Devil if your love is really like fire then you may need to see a medical practitioner!

Proper Tasty

The Proper Ornaments
From :
London, United Kingdom

With a name taken from a track by obscure 60s baroque popsters The Free Design it comes as no surprise that the Proper Ornaments sound like they've just emerged in a druggy haze from a beaten up time machine. They may not thank me for this but they sound like the product of an illicit late night drunken fumble between The Dandy Warhols and Blur with the fi button set to lo. They sound like a couple of laid back surfer dudes who have decided to dedicate their lives to putting the lo in mellow.

These ornaments are proper tasty.

Magic Circles

Young Circles
From: Miami, Florida, United States

Say what you will about music in the digital age it has certainly unleashed a new era of left field eclecticism. Take adventurous Floridians Young Circles for example. Their debut EP, 'Bones', is like a digital Pandora's box of cross-genre, cross generational sounds. It's a devastating and discordant sonic assault that sounds like nothing you've ever heard before and yet it sounds like everything you've ever heard before.

The EP is a joyride across musical genres with more influences than a chameleon in a wool shop. Check out the bizarre, idiosyncratic, refreshingly original Sharp Teeth which starts off like the great grandsons of Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club band tuning up before morphing into a Beckesque shuffle. 'Halfway Up' is a halfway house between the Jesus & Mary Chain and the Flaming Lips while the title track 'Bones' could be the Coral after a Krautrock transfusion.

This is the new music and it's not the same as the old music.

There There My Deer

Gazelle TwinGazelle Twin
From: Brighton / London, United Kingdom

Brighton's Elizabeth Walling, aka Gazelle Twin is a dream weaver, a dealer in ambience. She channels the spirits of Portishead, Lamb and Fever Ray into a bewitching, beguiling brew that shivers the soul. She sounds like Enya getting in touch with her dark side.

The stunning Changelings, with its existential lyrics, dramatic symphonies and dark electronica is the perfect introduction to the world of Gazelle Twin. It's chilling and beautiful, eerie and enchanting. The equally impressive video, produced and directed by Gazelle Twin herself, features an abstract world of shifting storms and changing faces of smoke and mirrors. All adding a chilly, surrealist underbelly to an already hauntingly beautiful track.

Gazelle Twin is going to be massive trust me.

The Season Of The Witch... House

A Witch House Primer

Witch House
Witch House is the strangest musical genre of this or any other year. With willfully obscure acts with hard to pronounce names like oOoOO,
///▲▲▲\\\ , Gr†ll Gr†ll, †‡† and. It's like they've been force fed the dictionary according to Prince and it makes it bloody difficult to find them on google or Last.FM!

Witch House is a convenient catch all for all sorts of dark-hued synth rock with it's roots in dubstep, ambience and trance. The sound is characterised by a dark, nightmarish sound with pitched-down vocals and languid suffocating synths. A sound that some have likened to being trapped in a haunted house and catching a glimpse of a ghost hence the sobriquet Witch House.
Some of it sounds more like music beamed in from radio Alien. Maybe it's already splitting into various sub genres and Alien House is just the first! Either way it's dirty finger nails will scratch the itch for lovers of everyone from Throbbing Gristle to Brian Eno, from My Bloody Valentine to Burial.

So this truly is the season of the witch... house.

It's a King Thing hail from the Haddons, the Hills and the Heights of suburban New Jersey. They're a bullish lot claiming that their songs can beat up other band's songs. Now that's fighting talk! Given that their

From: Hamburg, Germany

Fuck Art Let's Dance
With a name like Fuck Art, Let's Dance the German electro dance punk trio are highly unlikely to be appearing on Later with Jools Holland any time soon. But I doubt that'll have them weeping into their Hofmeister. Forward! Future! sounds like a speeded up Kraftwerk all robotic vocals and jerky electronics. By way of contrast Deja Vu channels the ghost of Robert Smith to generate a convulsive, danceable Cure-all. Happy Bird Day

H Bird
From: London, United Kingdom

H BirdAlt-pop trio H Bird are fluffier than a lamb after a trip to a car wash! Their quirky modern pop is shot through with enough sing along melodies to satiate the most jaded of indie-pop palates. With an ex member of Devil favourites (and much missed) 18 Carat Love Affair (Time To Return To The Gold Standard), and collaborations with David Shah of Luxembourg and The Melting Ice Caps (The Positive Side Of Global Warming) it was a good bet that they'd appeal to the Devil but they're shaking up the rest of the blogosphere with both The Quietus and The Von Pip Musical Express joining the Devil in hooking their love to the H Bird band wagon.

The trio's first album 'Operation: Fascination' is scheduled for release early in the new year. Put it on your after xmas gifts for yourself list and give yourself a happy bird day.

French Kissing In The Uk

French Kissing
From: London, United Kingdom

Something is stirring deep in the bowels of the UK's capital city. A musical underground sick of over produced, x factorised, pro-tools enhanced artificiality is casting around for purer more organic forms of music to satisfy their jaded souls. It'd over stating the case to argue that this represents a new pure musical movement and it could easily fizzle away like so many other short lived scenes. However maybe, just maybe, it's the start of the next revolution.

After the fuzzy lo-fi splendours of last night's featured band Mazes tonight's post features the even lower-fi surf popsters French Kissing. It's so lo-fi it's no-fi. Check out their cover of 'Beach Ball' an obscure track from The City Surfers first recorded in the year of the Devil's birth. It sounds like Da Do Ron Ron Ron recorded in a garage on tin cans and to these ears that's perfection.

The obnoxiously handsome Mighty Stef, who could earn good money as a Liam Gallagher lookalike, has the raw energy of Springsteen, the grit of Tom Waits and much better teeth than Shane McGowan.

His new album

Phil Wilson
Those readers with long memories and a birth certificate they'd rather keep locked away far from prying eyes may recall a cool indie band called The June Brides. Well said band's lead singer Phil Wilson is back. A little older, a little wiser and a little . His new album, 'God Bless Jim Kennedy' is packed full of indie pop delights. It's like being an indie kid in an indie pop sweet shop. The album recalls heady days of summer in the early 80s (yeah yeah I'm an old fart!) lying back on the freshly mown grass with the sound of The Pale Fountains on my walkman (google it indie kids). It sounds like the point at which Love morph into Burt Bacharach.
