Saturday's Kids
From: South Wales, United Kingdom
Sion the lead singer with old school punkers Saturday's Kids took some time out from straining his vocal chords to answer a few questions from the Devil.
The Devil: Why Saturday's Kids? What other names did you consider before finally deciding it had to be Saturday's Kids?
Sion: I can’t remember the exact names we had but they were pretty shocking we started this band when we were 15 so you can imagine how naive and awful some of the names were. It comes from a Jam song we all thought it sounded cool, there is no deep philosophical meaning to it.
The Devil: Who are your biggest influences?
Sion: There are about 5 bands I would say that have shaped our band significantly Sonic Youth, Black Flag, Joy Division, Pissed Jeans and Descendents. We try very hard not to be repetitive in any way, we don’t use any sort of formulaic song structure. we all have a huge variety of taste in music and that helps to give a changing point of view which gives the music more diversity. The Devil: What was the first record you owned and what was the first record you ever bought?

Sion: I can’t remember the first record I ever owned but the first record I remember being played to me was The Pixies Doolittle, I was 7 at the time and my oldest brother was listening to it, I thought monkey gone to heaven was the best song ever on the basis it was about a monkey. The first record I ever bought was Descendents everything sucks today, and album full of roaring punk tunes with surprisingly pop orientated melodies.
The Devil: What's the strangest place you've played and would you go back there?
Sion: The strangest place also happens to be the best, we played our 7” record release show in the basement of an antiques market in Cardiff. It was only lit by 3 green fluorescent lights and looked ominously like a scene from fight club. It was an amazing show where people just turned up to have fun, seeing people flying across the room and really getting into the bands was something truly special. Maybe one day something similar will happen again. The Devil: Other than Saturdays Kids who are the most exciting bands on the current music scene?Sion: Ono Palindromes are a really exiting band from Exeter its amazing to see some experimental tunings done well, and they blast out the grunge/pop tunes so easily (I can;t agree more the Devil is a huge Ono Palindromes fan). Harbour are a south Wales band who are playing the hardest but also the most original hardcore in the UK and maybe the world at the moment, they take a lot of influence from harder dischord bands like Dag Nasty and Scream, also the one guitarist comes out with the most insane guitar lines. The Devil: If you weren't in
Saturdays Kids how would you keep yourself occupied?
Sion: Most probably doing another band in the same vein, as long as I get to make noise and lots of it with a guitar I am happy, if not music related it would be something like photography. The Devil: If you were interviewing yourself what would your killer question be and how would you answer it?
Sion: Q: Are you Happy? A: Ummmmmmmmm yesThe Devil: What's your favourite joke?
Sion: Yo mamma's so fat she found cheats for the wii fit The Devil: What did you used to do on a Saturday when you were a kid?
Sion: Watch some really bad cartoons and try and stay up as long as possible.
The Devil: Is there anything else you'd like to say to the Devil's readers?
Sion: We have got a new record coming out in the next month or so, it is a split 10” with Kids Return from Brighton, and another 7” a few months after that.
