Angels With Painted Faces

WarpaintWarpaint
From: Los Angeles, California, United States

In a perfect world Warpaint would be soundtracking the lives of everyone on earth. Their sound, think Mazzy Star meets Blonde Redhead in a dense California fog, is simply breathtaking.

The haunting 'Billie Holiday', a spine tingling cover of Mary Wells' 1964 hit 'My Guy', is possibly the best cover version I've heard since The Cowboy Junkies sublime cover of 'Sweet Jane'. Warpaint turn Well's original inside out until it sounds like the last lament of a bunny boiler. It's a contender for the Devil's track of the year and there's still eleven months to go.

The standards set by 'Billie Holiday' would be difficult for any band to maintain yet Warpaint have a whole kitbag full of tracks that tingle the spine like a massage from a snowman. Check out the primal, pagan hymn 'Burgundy', the heartbreaking 'Elephants' and the funereal, yet beautiful, 'Set Your Arms Down'.

It's time to don the Warpaint.
