The Only Way Is Up

Letting Up Despite Great Faults
Genre: Indie / Electro / Shoegaze
From: Los Angeles, California, United States

Cali nu gazers the verbosely monikered Letting Up Despite Great Faults are about to release their debut, self-titled LP in October 2009. Not a band to rush things their debut lands a full three years since the release of their well received debut seven track EP Movement. A band clearly not afraid of 'borrowing' the title of a New Order album!

The band have used their time wisely and well, embellishing the intimate, intricate and melancholic songs that filled 'Movement' with catchy guitars and dance beats. The new album chronicles hard times, sad times and those all too rare times when your heart is light and all is well with the world. It's the perfect album to soundtrack a Sunday afternoon drive through the countryside during a rainstorm or a pensive evening at home alone after a difficult day.

Letting Up Despite Great Faults is an album to grow old with which is just as well because it'll probably be another three years until their next one.

It's Oh So Quiet

The Hush NowThe Hush Now
Alternative / Indie / Pop
From: Boston, Massachusetts
United States

The Hush Now, would be a perfect name for a quintet of shoegazers, and true to form they have a fine line in sugarspun melodies that sound like dreams. But, although they have been compared to the shoegazing likes of My Bloody Valentine, to this Devil's ears they're closer to the blend of dreamy, cocky indie rock and 60s styled jangle pop of the Stone Roses. Check out 'Hoping & Waiting' below which starts out like the great grandson of A Whiter Shade Of Pale before slipping into a pair of 24 inch flared jeans and coming on all Stone Rosey.

Crying Wolf

Wolf & CubWolf & Cub
Genre: Post-Punk / Indie / Psychedelia
From: Adelaide, Australia

In a move that's likely to confuse and alienate fans of their rocking debut Vessels Australia alt-rockers Wolf & Cub have teamed up with cut ‘n paste specialist and Bumblebeez main man, Chris Colonna for their new, challenging, album Science And Sorcery.

Ambition and risk taking and only on their second album what is the world coming to? Mixing up Parliament style funkadelic riffs with cut-up beats, chunky choruses and Flaming Lips-style melodrama Science And Sorcery is certainly unique.

The Aussie four piece, named after a Japanese comic Lone Wolf & Cub have elected to encore the album with the release of their blistering new single, One to the Other. With its hypnotic bass and explosive guitars, One To The Other bends itself out of shape, recoils and surges back at you with each verse.

Meet The Neighbours

Darling New Neighbors
Genre: Rock / Indie / Soul
From: Austin, Texas, United States

Comparisons fall fast and loose with the Darling New Neighbors, who play upon the soft-hard smash like The Pixies and lo-fi contemporaries, the Vivian Girls. They're eclectic without being diluted, genre-mixing without getting lost and they're great if you need to borrow some sugar.

The Darling New Neighbors were born in 2004, when Elizabeth, a classically trained violinist with roots in the Dirty South, met bluegrasser with a heart of rock-androll,
Amy Moreland. Drummer Karl Lundin recently became the band's magical third element.

'Rocket', the trio's self-released follow-up to debut album Every Day Is Saturday Night, is filled with tracks that shapeshift like an epileptic werewolf. From the riffed, sprawling Electrolux to the masochistic, Latin-flavored Tango, from the love as flash-burning and flesh burning resource, Gasoline to the dirty-talk thrash of Take It and the psychedelic, girl-group layers of Stars listening to 'Rocket' is like dipping your hand into a box of musical Quality Street.

With 'Rocket' Darling New Neighbors are about to go into orbit.

Back The Knife

Shonen Knife
Genre: Pop Punk / Rock / Japanese Pop
From: 大阪府, Japan

For those of you out there who have been looking the other way over the past 25 years or have a blind spot when it comes to non western music Shonen Knife is the most legendary all-female Japanese pop-punk band in the history of the world.

The trio formed in Osaka, Japan way back in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, and early punk rock acts, such as The Beach Boys and The Ramones, they play stripped-down songs with melodies even more infectious than swine flu and simplistic, exuberant lyrics sung both in Japanese and English. Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and D.I.Y. aesthetics.

And they're back with a great new album, 'Super Group'. As you'd expect with Shonen Knife the album has it's share of cuteseyness like the harmonies that close 'Na Na Na' but it's not all perky charm. The title track is a dynamite blast of old school punk pop, kinda like the Buzzcocks in kimonos while 'Muddy Bubbles Hell' and 'Pyramid Power' are more metallic, like the result of a hostile takeover of Black Sabbath by Hello Kitty. 'BBQ Party' starts with a Jonathan Richman like intro before transforming itself into the purest form of punk rock. They girls even find time to indulge themselves with a boisterous and amusing cover of Paul McCartney and the Wings song 'Jet'.

With a title like Super Group Shonen Knife could have made a rod for their own backs but the album is super and they are a Super Group.

Hot Hot Heat

Not CoolNot Cool
Genre: Funk / Rock / Fusion / Gutter Pop
From: Downham, London, United Kingdom

Although Christmas is still three months away we could easily get into a bout of pantomime shouting with London post-punks Not Cool. Oh yes you are, oh no we're not, oh yes you are. Despite their name it is true that the modestly named Not Cool are actually cool. In fact they're so cool they could freeze fire.

The trio, who've only been together for a little over a year, are self styled purveyors of gutter pop which roughly translates as the slacker pop of pavement speeded up a little and given an art rock patina.

Their first single 'Wonderful Beasts' has just been released as a limited edition (200 copies) on glorious 7" vinyl backed by 'The Bell Curve' and a track that is a real contender for title of the year 'Um You Didn't Do That In Soundcheck'.

Wolf Parade

The WolfmenThe Wolfmen
Genre: Rock / Experimental / Punk
From: London, United Kingdom

The Wolfmen is the brainchild of Marco Pirroni (Siouxsie & The Banshees/Adam & The Ants) and Chris Constantinou (Adam Ant/Jackie OnAssid). The duo, who formed in 2005, have a new single out, the spine tingling 'Jackie, is it my birthday?' a duet between Chris and Sinéad O’Connor that's the biggest, grittiest ballad you’ll hear this year.

The boys took time out from hob nobbing with Irish musical royalty to provide an exclusive insight into the Wolfmen, their influences, the strangest place they've played and some tips to beat the credit crunch.

The Devil: Why The Wolfmen? What other names did you ponder before deciding on The Wolfmen?

Chris: Ask Marco...

Marco: I thought of it coz it sounded like a lost garage punk/instrumental band from 1959 who made a few obscure Link Wray-type singles that turned up on Songs The Cramps Taught Us Vol. 3, or a doomed German fighter squadron from 1945 who never even got into the air before the war ended. We were nearly The Lords of
Discipline but cooler heard prevailed!

The Devil: Who are your biggest influences?

Marco: Roxy Music, Bowie, Velvets, John Barry, 60s garage punk, Sex Pistols...

Chris: T-Rex, Lou Reed, Jethro Tull (for flute and harmonica), more T-Rex, Hendrix, Iggy Pop, the bassist James Jamerson

The Devil: What was the first record The Wolfmen owned and what was the first record they ever bought?

Chris: The first records I bought were Dave & Ansil Collins' Double Barrell, Hendrix's Are You Experienced, Electric Warrior by T-Rex, and Percy Sledge's
When A Man Loves a Woman...

Marco: First record ever owned would be Fireball XL5. First record ever bought with my own pocket money would be Get Down Get With It by Slade.

The Devil: What makes The Wolfmen stand out from the millions of other bands in the world? What makes you unique?

Marco: Our wealth of experience but also we are no longer desperate to 'make it big'...

Chris: If we are unique then I guess that must be down to the bands we both listened to and then the way we both spat that out, so to speak!

The Devil: What's the strangest place you've ever played and would you go back there?

Chris: Hmmm... I played in Frankfurt when I was about 17 and a guy shot another guy dead in the audience, and the singer told me to keep playing. That was pretty strange I guess.

Marco: I played places all over the world and personally I wouldn't want to go back to any of them...

The Devil: Other than The Wolfmen, who are the most exciting bands on the music scene at the moment?

Marco: I don't know I haven't been paying too much attention.

Chris: I like Noah And The Whale. Not exciting, but I like them. And I like Tinariwen!

The Devil: If you weren't in The Wolfmen how would you keep yourself occupied?

Chris: As I spend pretty much 18 hours a day on The Wolfmen, I have no idea!...

Marco: I don't want to think about that. The battle against boredom is my biggest reason to keep going.

The Devil: What are you doing to beat the credit crunch? Any tips on saving money for The Devil's readers?

Marco: You are asking the wrong people. Spend, spend, spend is our motto...anyway you can't take it with you

Chris: Well they've closed down Kwik Save which was pretty good in times of need - 20 cans of baked beans for a quid, a barrel of cider for a fiver, a sack of lentils for a quid. a sack of onions for 50p, a barrel of gin for a fiver, a sack of spuds for 50p.... Kwik Save Love, that's a name of a song I wrote during the Kwik Save Islington days.

The Devil: If you were interviewing yourself what would be your killer question and how would you answer it?

Chris: Why do you always sing about Jackie and girls with bee-stung pouty lips with freckles? And I would say, I don't know.

Marco: "What the fuck do you think you're doing?" "Doing the only thing we know how."

The Devil: Anything else you'd like to say the the devil's readers?

Chris: Yes, can anyone tell me why Daniel our drummer is so strange??...

Marco: Don't you think this website has a clever name? (The Devil: Why thank you kind sir)

Rocking All Over The World

Globes on RemoteGlobes on Remote
Genre: Psychedelic / Pop / Other
From: Los Angeles, California
United States

Based in Los Angeles, California, Globes on Remote was formed in 2008 and apparently named after an event that can never be retold in print.

The quartet's influences channel all the cheesy living room dance-party tracks of Tom Tom Club, Hall and Oates, Michael Jackson, Huey Lewis and they were all ape-shit for Beat It as kids, but don't let any of that put you off. While it's not strictly by the book dance music when Globes on Remote crack open their horns, megaphones, guitars, and noise effects people dance.

Their debut album, The Woo Hoo Hoo,
is scheduled for release on November 17, 2009. A dancy, anthemic album full of songs about wannabe stuntmen, spacement, sleazy professors, carnival operators and neurotic porn writers all retold over beats to die for.

Genre: Acoustic / Indie / Alternative
From: Bergen, Norway

Kings of Convenience
Eirik Bøe and Erlend Øye, collectively Kings of Convenience, have unveiled the brand new video for the first single, ‘Boat Behind’, to be taken from ‘Declaration Of Dependence’, their first album in five years .

‘Boat Behind’ is released on the 12th October with Declaration of Dependence following a week later on the 19th October.

Here’s what Eirik has said of ‘Boat Behind’

“The lyric was inspired by our German viola player, Toby. He and Erlend [Øye] were reading an article about someone crossing the Atlantic on a surfboard, when Toby said – in English – there must have been a boat behind. It was a great image. We think this song belongs to our grandparents, but we can’t work out which decade we’ve been inspired by.”

Strawberry Fields Forever

Strawberry Whiplash
Genre: Indie / Pop
From: Glasgow, United Kingdom

Sandra and Laz (of Bubblegum Lemonade) are Strawberry Whiplash. Based in Glasgow, Scotland where everyone is in a pop band, and many of them in more than one. It’s in the blood, it’s in the water and it’s in the contract.

Once described as a cross between Scottish forefathers/mothers Strawberry Switchblade and Meat Whiplash they're more like the missing link between Sarah Records and Creation Records or the point at which The Darling Buds turn into My Bloody Valentine.

The duo have just released their second EP, Picture Perfect, four fuzzy tracks that jangle like a nervous skeleton while the enchanting Sandra croons like a frustrated femme fatale. An EP that's
as sweet as a chocolate covered strawberry dipped in sugar and indier than Steve Lamacq's ipod.

Trebled Times

ddd
Genre: Other
From: London, United Kingdom

With a name that looks like their typewriter (does anyone still use a typewriter these days?) stuck London avant punkers ddd were never likely to be just another piss poor bunch of 21st century pr polished indie boys. Their spirit is rooted in the early 80s when punk veered off into all sorts of esoteric directions, when attitude counted more than technique and art was important than more than entertainment. An era in music that, in the Devil's humble opinion, has never been bettered.

ddd sound like they've overdosed on PIL while reading the the complete works of Kafka. Entering their world is like slipping into an alternate universe, the imaginariam of Doctor Pere Ubu all oddly shaped and angular. If Liars had been brought up on a sink estate in north London where hope and ambition have been crushed by the dead weight of decades of neglect they'd probably sound like ddd.

The Pirate Bay

Penfold GatePenfold Gate
Genre: Melodramatic Popular Song / Powerpop / Folk
From: Shepshed, United Kingdom

Avast and take heed. ʻPiratesʼ is the debut single from Loughborough based quartet ʻPenfold Gateʼ. The bandʼs intelligently constructed songs and genre bending music has seen them capture the attention of Rob Da Bank and led to support call ups from the likes of Noah And The Whale, The Futureheads and The Young Knives, in addition to an appearance on Channel 4ʼs ʻJack Daniels Setʼ.

The quirkily named outfit instantly grab your attention with the opening bars of this multifaceted slice of addictive Power-Folk. Driven predominantly by front man Pete Floodʼs acoustic guitar, the track is kick started by an explosive opening riff, which unleashes a wave of aggressive energy. Pirates is a slice of breathy, guitar pop escapism with a soaring chorus so powerful it's likely to induce scurvy. As the track reaches it's climax before fading majestically away youʼre left feeling almost seasick, yet glad to be aboard and in possession of this obvious treasure.

Biff Bang Pow

Listen LisseListen Lisse
Genre: Indie / Rock / Melodramatic Popular Song
From: East London, United Kingdom

Cockney Kiwi Lisa McKendrick, otherwise known as Listen Lisse, an artiste that the Devil has been keeping tabs on since the early days of the blog (Listen Lisse & Gifthorse, New Listen Lisse Album) has a new album out, 'Pow Bang'. Originally a solo artist Lisa has been joined on 'Pow Bang' by Eddie Darko (Rosa Alchemica) giving the album a fuller feel than Listen Lisse's album 'It's Not You'.

On 'Pow Bang' mild mannered Lisa puts on her boxing gloves for 11 rounds of pure emotional pugilism. Pow Bang the listener is floored, Pow Bang true love hits the deck, Pow Bang ex-lovers are knocked out. Lisa even goes as far as wishing her lover dead on 'Street Lights' which is probably just a bit of pre bout machismo, or she could just mean it!

Crafty, melodic, layered, painful, haunting and inspired with Lisa's voice racked with emotion constantly on the verge of breaking down this is an album that you need to hear.

Unchained Melody

Melody NelsonMelody Nelson
Genre: Self Medicated Rock From: London, London and South East, United Kingdom

Melody Nelson have earned a reputation as London’s loudest band. Inspired by sonic pioneers Love, Muddy Waters, Serge Gainsbourg and repeated listens to garage rock and psychedelia collection Nuggets the band were formed in London’s East End by Irish-Jamaican-Londoner Aidan O’Connell (Vocals and Guitar) Birmingham born bassist Ben Edwards and Israeli drumming powerhouse Kapi. The trio have been busy creating feedback drenched soundscapes throughout the UK and Europe with their incendiary live show. On the back of numerous blistering headline performances they have recently opened for Peter Doherty and Seasick Steve.

A chance introduction through mutual pal Kevin Shields to David Roback of Mazzy Star at My Bloody Valentine's Roundhouse residency inspired the group to take a less unbridled approach. Having helped pioneer L.A’s Paisley underground scene and having worked with and produced artists such as Jesus and The Mary Chain, Arthur Lee and Bert Jansch, David Roback was the perfect candidate to enable Melody Nelson to galvinise their power trio intensity and bring the melody to the fore.

The group set about writing and demoing songs at Roback’s winter residence in London adding harmonies, texture and layers to an already respectable body of songs. After many all night demo sessions and copious amounts of red wine, Melody Nelson set about recording their debut album, 'Torch Songs' scheduled for release on Gramaphone Recordings this autumn.
The album encapsulates the infamous Melody Nelson fire and brimstone intensity, whilst adding layers of subtlety to the overall mood. Melody Nelson bring you feedback-drenched anthems about love, loss and confusion hard intensely and at a suitably high volume.

For those who can’t wait for the album, you can download one of the album tracks, 'The Other Side' courtesy of the Devil and you can hear some more of the tracks at the bands myspace site at the link below.

Everybody's Talkin 'Bout Pop Muzik

Robin ScottM
Genre: Pop Muzik

From: United Kingdom

New York, London, Paris, Munich... Everybody lives for Pop Muzik! M's seminal Pop Muzik hit #1 in the US in 1979 and, in the UK, hit #2 as Art Garfunkel's Bright Eyes was at #1, signalling the end of the easy listening, MOR- saturated 1970s and ushering in the electro, new wave 1980s whose influence is all over the current pop charts. Pop Muzik's influence is everywhere... it's been featured in Priscilla Queen of the Desert, covered by hip-hop acts like Tricky and even been honoured with versions in LEGO and The Sims. It's probably the best one hit wonder in the history of music.

But can you get too much of a good thing? Well Union Square Music are testing this with a 30th anniversary compilation of 13 various versions and remixes of the classic new wave anthem. 'Pop Muzik - The Remix Album' compiles original versions, demos, and remixes, like Perfecto's Steve Osbourne mix, one of several commissioned by U2 (all of which are featured on the album) as the opening anthem of their Pop Mart tour. Other tracks come from dance artists including Junior Vasquez and Dub Pistols, brand new work from new wave pioneers Devo, and even a Cuban/salsa cover version by Rhumba Calzada.

M's Robin Scott has taken some time out from pondering whether you can get too much of a good thing to share some thoughts about the 30 years since Pop Muzik hit the the racks.

The Devil: It's been 30 years so is everyone still talking about pop music?

Robin Scott:
Everyone is still talking, but now they inhabit the iworld, with bluetooth implants exchanging useless information alone over a coffee in Starbucks. A vacant gaze locks on nothing as the conversation melts into 10,000,000 tunes of infinite wallpaper within the temple of the sacred ipod. Popular culture is no longer real but virtual is it not?

The Devil: If not what are they talking about?

Robin Scott: The final frontiers of desire and dreams that money can buy.

The Devil:
Why M?

Robin Scott:
It's minimal it's meaningless it's everywhere.

The Devil:
What other names did you ponder before deciding on M?

Robin Scott: Robin Scott

The Devil: Who were/are the biggest influences on Pop Muzik?

Robin Scott: Andy Warhol, Stockhausen, Woody Guthrie, John Lennon and pirate radio.

The Devil: What are you listening to these days?

Robin Scott: Still scanning the airwaves of the radio network, good advice, clocks, the bees, the breeze and soundtracks.

The Devil: Who are your favourite acts from New York, London, Paris and Munich?

Robin Scott: I don't have any pinups or favourites that spring to mind, but all those capitals are overflowing with gifted artists Given the opportunity I would happily explore the live scene in each and hopefully discover the folk/pop music of our time and the clearest voice closest to my heart.

The Devil: What was the first record you ever bought?

Robin Scott:
'Wonderful Land' by the Shadows.

The Devil:
What's the strangest place you've ever played and would you go back
there?

Robin Scott:
There's nothing more strange than playing before an uninvited audience, but then again it's totally natural when people have no expectations. Street performing can be both lucrative and rewarding artistically. It's the toughest stage to master. It's been a while but I could be drawn to busking again.

The Devil:
What are you doing to beat the credit crunch?

Robin Scott: There's no beating the credit crunch. Human nature is flawed, greed is
rife because we live in a spiritual vacuum. Like Obama wrote in Audacity of Hope, there is a need for a natural arc in our lives, a sense of purpose, a community anchor of common accord sharing trust, personal security and welfare without passwords and gatekeepers. Credit is cool but we now need to take this opportunity to self regulate our personal lifestyle decisions. Banking practices simply reflect our consumer patterns and what we're prepared to tolerate in terms of affordability. In other words, we're dealing with the Devil within funnily enough. Meanwhile, it's no coincidence that pressing green issues are testing our ability to evolve and adapt. It's an inevitable cultural shift for survival. So it's all good basically.

The Devil:
Any tips on saving money you can pass on to the Devil's
readers?

MRobin Scott: Think outside the package!

The Devil:
If you
were interviewing yourself what would be your killer question and how would you answer it?

Robin Scott:
Q. Would you like to exchange roles? A. Sure!

The Devil:
Anything else you'd like to say to the Devil's readers?

Robin Scott: Life is short get back to it and live every moment to the limit!

Little Girls
Genre: Minimalist / Post punk
From: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto-based group Little Girls has only been in existence since January 2009 and this is their second appearance on the Devil's blog (first appearance back in June, Thank Heaven For Little Girls) which must be some sort of record. The guys are
preparing for an extensive North American tour performing with Japandroids, Monotonix, You Say Party! We Say Die!, Wavves and Nurses among others. They are also about to release their debut album, 'Concepts', an eleven-track album that spans the bands short life to date from the very first track they wrote to brand new material. The album will be available on CD, limited vinyl, and digitally, through Paper Bag Records on October 13th.

Before hitting the road, Little Girls recorded a cover of one of their influences, '70s/'80s Sheffield, UK post-punk group Artery's song 'Heinz', and made it available as a free mp3 download in celebration of their upcoming tour.
