Song writing is at the core of Danielle Spencer’s new album Calling All Magicians. Thirteen stories of observations and experiences, precariously balanced between dark and light.
Danielle’s debut album White Monkey was released through EMI Australia in 2001 to critical approval and radio support shortly after which she put her foot on the brake pedal to spend more time with her family. But the muse remained and she began writing songs on her piano at home in her bedroom; detaching herself from the world outside. These songs were shaped and moulded over time until she had an album worth of songs for her second album Calling All Magicians.
Looking for someone to produce the album one of her friends suggested the legendary Tony Visconti ( best known for his groundbreaking work with David Bowie in the 70’s and, more recently producer of Morrissey's Ringleader of the Tormentors) so Danielle sent him a four track demo. To Danielle's surprise Visconti loved her demos describing her as a cross between Kate Bush and David Bowie.
The album is scheduled for release in early 2010 with first single Wish I’d Been Here out in the UK on 12th October but you can take a sneak preview courtesy of the Devil.

Piney Gir Genre: Indie / Folk / Soul From: London, United Kingdom Piney Gir, who was recently interviewed by the Devil (see On The Trail O The Lonesome Piney), is creating quite a stir with her country girl schtick and songs about love and heartache.
But it's not all hankies out, maudlin tales of sorrow and Dolly Parton dresses the 'Queen of the Bitterscene' has a capricious side. Check out the whimsical little ditty Blixa Bargeld's Bicycle where Piney kidnaps Syd Barrett and throws him in a cell with Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins.

The Perfects Genre: New Wave / Electro / Rock From: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Arrogance is a nasty thing when it isn’t supported by, you know, talent. So naming your band The Perfects is one hell of a trap. Luckily, this Baltimore quartet has managed to craft a record truly without fault, a set of songs so confident it’s – wait for it… -- perfect.
Released a few short years after the fan-baiting EP that introduced his band to audiences in 2006, founding member and frontman Ric Peters created something special with his full-length debut, Future Automatic. Hints of Duran Duran’s bleery-eyed romance sneak through here. Moments of the Cure’s maudlin bounce there. In the end, with the aid of Bravery and the Church producer Nic Hard, Peters and company have created a bouquet of 80s influences that dash any suggestion of arrogance.

Electric Tickle Machine Genre: Psychedelic / Garage / Pop From: e. vill, New York United States
Guys what possessed you to saddle yourselves with a name like Electric Tickle Machine? It's possibly the least appropriate name in music since Savage Garden! Their name sounds more like one of those faux anarchic Saturday morning kids show with the 'wacky' presenters than a band with a fine line in jangly, lo fi, drugged up rock. It's possibly the least cool band name this side of Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
The band will be releasing their debut album, Blew It Again, in October, a spacey bundle of psychedelic fuzz that'll have your cochlea begging for more. From the title track's conciliation of the confounding, to the spooky shuffle of Bones, the sincere hand-clapper Part Of Me to the twangy, countrified Fast Train, Blew It Again satisfies the most eclectic of musical cravings.

Since January 2009, alt-folksters Noah & The Whale has been in the studio working on their second full length LP, 'The First Days of Spring'. The new album, due to be released on October 6th, is more electric than previous works and there's a running narrative throughout the album describing the disillusion of a relationship. Along with the album release, Charlie Fink is making a film that will run the entire length of the album, also entitled The First Days of Spring.
Forthcoming single 'Blue Skies' which got it's first airplay on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show on 22nd June 2009 (the Devil's wifes birthday), is available from the band's website (see link below).

The Orb Genre: Ambient / Alternative / Electronica From: United Kingdom The mighty Orb return in September 2009 with new album Baghdad Batteries, on Malicious Damage Records. An album of classic Orb elements combined with new twists, Baghdad Batteries utilises years at the forefront of the ever-changing spectrum of electronic sub-genres. For the uninitiated, The Orb are national treasures and musical pioneers.
These startling electronic odysseys were hatched by Orb founder Dr Alex Paterson and with long-time collaborator Thomas Fehlmann, The Orb’s Berlin connection. Setting the controls beyond any earthly confines, the duo’s jaunt is laced with humour and passes many moons of dub, techno, minimal, ambient, house, rock steady and the avant garde on their journey through the cosmos.
The title comes from a major archaeological find discovered in a village near Baghdad in 1936 dating back around 2,000 years to the Mesopotamian Parthian period, and thought to be the world’s first primitive battery . The album is actually the third volume in the Malicious Damage ongoing Orbsessions series, but whereas the previous two were compiled from nuggets trawled from the vaults, these are new tracks recorded at Thomas’ Berlin studio, which also provide the soundtrack for Austrian director Werner Boote’s film Plastic Planet.
The opening Styrofoam Meltdown rains in with similar sense of extra-terrestrial shock and awe which would levitate the heart-strings when The Orb revved up their live shows with O.O.B.E. in the early 90s, a kind of heavenly carwash explosion of interstellar frequencies, which here sees the inter-acting pulses joined by kick drum and at one point, even invokes the ghost of Giorgio Moroder’sI Feel Love.
Chocolate Fingers starts as a beatless piece, drenched in shimmering keys with shining melodic strands setting off an aural firework display, stun-quotient doubled when the chord changes kick in. The title track is gorgeously haunting as marimba tones melt over swirling effects before one of the highlights – the pastoral Raven’s Reprise, a poignant tribute to the late Killing Joke bassist. This celestial electronic space symphony is followed by another…oh bollocks, they’re all highlights!
Dolly Unit is a dense, throbbing tech-flavoured pulser, sprayed with bluesy guitar peelings, giving way to an ancient rock steady beat before the muted house shuffle of Super Soakers. The beat carries on into Suburban Smog, deploying spaced tribal percussion and lush, organic ambience. Big Hammond chords highlight Orban Tumbleweed before the spoken interlude of Pebbles. Old mucker Max Loderbauer from Sun Electric came in on the breezy sax and bleep vamp of Woodlarking while the creaking resonance of OOPA takes the album out – actually a non-movie nugget first released on noted German electronic label Skitkatapult last year [the initials stand for Out Of Place Artefact].

British synth-pop sensation, the quifftastic La Roux are set to hit the shores of North America for a slew of highly anticipated performances this fall in support of their self titled US debut coming out September 29th on Cherrytree Records.
21-year-old Elly Jackson and co-producer co-songwriter co-hort Ben Langmaid, the talented South London duo who make up La Roux, have made an impressive impact on the UK’s music scene since joining forces two years ago. While collaboration began in London’s burgeoning underground warehouse scene, it has since landed the pair a highly coveted Mercury Prize nomination and hot singles on daytime radio and the upper echelons of the British charts.
With just about a month left until the US release of debut full-length La Roux, the album continues to make waves in the UK – with its dazzling current single Bulletproof entering the UK Singles Chart at #1 and In For The Kill, the album’s first single, selling more copies than any other single this year!
If you don't mind registering with La Roux you can download 'Quicksand & Fascination' from her website by clicking here.
Lemon Demon Genre: Alternative / Pop / Comedy From: Kingston, Massachusetts, United States
While surfing around the internet I stumbled across the Last.FM site of Lemon Demon, otherwise known as Neil Cicerega. While Neil is probably best known for being the creator of a genre of Flash animation known as Animutation he has a sideline in clever, tongue in cheek, occasionally side splitting, 'comedy' rock.
The prolific Lemon Demon announced himself with the clever 'Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny', about an apocalypse caused by pop culture characters, since when he's released five full length albums! Where a lot of so called 'comedy' rock is funny on first listen and then grows increasingly annoying the more you listen Lemon Demon's songs stand up as songs in their own right. That they are also clever and funny is an added bonus. He's smart without ever being smart arsed, he's clever without being too clever for his own good, he's wise without being a wise guy.
If you like Liam Lynch and Wierd Al Yankovich you'll love Lemon Demon.
Heroes Of Popular Wars Genre: Ambient / Electroacoustic From: Los Angeles/Brooklyn, New York, United States
Those of you who have been following the Devil's blog with interest over the past few years may recall a post back in the dark days of October 2007 on US band Heroes of Popular Wars (Heroes of Popular Wars). Well they're back with a new LP the ambitious 'Church and McDonald'. Where once the HOPW sound had it's feet firmly placed in Brian Eno's ambient flowerbeds it's expanded to embrace pop, dance, found sound and anxiety.
It's difficult to pick out just a couple of tracks on an album that is best heard in full from start to finish but special mention should be made of the dance inflected 'A Bus Called Further' a Steely Dan homage, 'She's A Microscope'which starts out as a slow, candy-coated pop song that builds and builds before exploding like a bomb in a synth factory and 'American Loser', a two-part pop song/dirge that sounds like Kevin Shields playing tug of war with 80's Peter Gabriel.
Juliet The Sun Genre: Rock From: Northampton, Midlands, United Kingdom
With Flintoff’s quick-speed reactions and Broad’s impeccable bowling, England undoubtedly deserved their Ashes win yesterday at The Oval. However, they were also deriving inspiration from an unlikely source- a UK band called Juliet the Sun who’s new single Time for Heroes was psyching the players up before each match.
"Time for Heroes by Juliet the Sun is a fantastic rock anthem sung by Steve Crook who I've played cricket with and it's a really uplifting tune that's I've listened to before many key sessions in the dressing room this summer to get me in the zone. Cricketers all like upbeat music before playing and 'Time for Heroes' definitely fits the bill. It's also quite funny that a track sung by an Australian has given me a psychological edge during the Ashes!"
James Anderson, England Bowler
The 5-piece Northampton rock band Juliet the Sun are fronted by no other than an Australian lead singer Steve Crook, also a professional cricketer for Northants Cricket Club who plays with England’s Monty Panesar and has previously played in the same team as a number of England stars such as James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Andrew Flintoff. The track has really stuck a chord with the England team and has become their unofficial favourite track for their fantastic win!
Before the Ashes started this summer, Steve sent his band’s new single to the England players he knew to wish them luck. The rest as they say is history. The track became a regular fixture in the England dressing room and the lads listened to it in the changing room before facing the Aussies to get them psyched up and in the mood. Since the story broke in The Guardian, Daily Express and Mail on Sunday the media response to the track has been phenomenal with live performances on BBC Radio Five Live, BBC News and BBC Look East. The band were even asked to perform during the final Oval Ashes test to support the England team and Time for Heroes, self-produced in lead guitarist Lionel’s brand new studio in which he decided to buy instead of a house, is a timeless anthemic track that showcases the range of Crook’s vocals over emotive electric guitar melodies.
Although Aussie Steve has been getting a ribbing from his mates back home in Adelaide, he is proud to say he has helped his fellow team mates succeed in a fantastic win this Summer. So get ready to hear ‘Time for Heroes’ on emotional sporting moment montages for the foreseeable future because the track sums up everything that is great about an unforgettable sporting summer.
!Mayday! Genre: Zouk / Shoegaze / Concrete From: Miami Beach, Florida, United States
Miami is hot. But !Mayday! is sweltering. Riding one of those threatening tsunamis of critical acclaim into the summer of 2009, this Florida future-hop collective blows minds wide open on Technology, a 6-song tour de force of android-soul, interstellar club banging and time machine madness that maniacally melds genre to delightful effect.
We’d come to expect this sort of thing from !Mayday!, who’ve been turning heads for three years on the strength of their NYT-approved smash, 'Groundhog Day', its record-setting YouTube video, and the cavalcade of “damn, this is good” that came out of the music world after MTV took a shine to the group and Entourage came calling. David Sylvian Genre: Experimental / Pop From: United Kingdom
You have to admire David Sylvian, the Scott Walker of his generation. Once the 'most beautiful man in the world' he could have ridden the wave trading his credibility for fame and fortune instead he opted to leap off the celebrity surf board and retain his sanity. Today he's so obscure he'd probably struggle to be recognised on Never Mind The Buzzcocks' Identity Parade. But his music speaks for itself.
On new album 'Manafon' , a sister piece to the Blemish album, Sylvian manages to make Bon Iver sound like The Polyphonic Spree with an intimate, emotive set of songs that have a strangely calming effect. It's so intimate that it sometimes feels like you're invading Sylvian's space.
Sylvian's voice dominates the album like a feudal squire, his resonant tenor and deliberate vibrato enveloping you completely. 'Manafon' is music as art not entertainment for drunked up, drugged up pre-teens, it's serious music for chinstrokers, it's as close as music gets to pure poetry so it's fitting that there's a track devoted to Emily Dickenson and the title track depicts British poet R.S. Thomas.
The Manafon starting pistol is cocked and ready for firing on 14th September.
Hotel St George Genre: French pop / Big Beat / Thrash From: San Diego, California United States
Singer Matt Binder (formerly of Vinyl Radio) and bassist Erik Visnyak (formerly of A Weeks Worth) founded Hotel St. George (not to be confused with Italian dance music “project” Hotel Saint George) in 2007 , and the band have been on an upward trajectory ever since. Managing, so far, to avoid the urge to split like a pitta pocket which infects the San Diegan musical scene like a killer virus Hotel St George have just released their debut album 'City Boy Lemon'.
For an album released into the community by a band from San Diego they sound more English than Devon cream tea and bad dentistry. They even manage to slip in a piece of cockney rhyming slang for 'Apples & Pears' a perfectly paced piece of schizoid pop that doesn't know whether it wants to be The Kinks, David Bowie when he still called himself Davy Jones or XTC.
'City Boy Lemon' is brimming with songs that'll grab hold of your hippocampus and cling on for dear life. 'All Those Dancing Stars' with it's uh uh's and wry lyrics about death sounds like The Killers attempting a powerpop tribute to the Buzzcocks and has already set up camp in my brain. 'Island Man' is off kilter pop that a signed up member of the Elephant Six collective would be proud to call their own while title track 'City Boy Lemon' is a short acoustic, almost throwaway, little ditty that performs it's duty on the album in a similar way to 'Elizabeth My Dear' on the Stone Roses debut.
I could go on providing pithy one liners for all the tracks on the album but rather than run the risk of verbalising you, dear reader, to death I recommend that you go visit the band at their Last.FM site where you can hear for yourself and then put your hand in your pocket and purchase yourself a copy.
It's time you checked in and started living it up at the Hotel St George.

STS9 Genre: Instrumental rock, electronic, jam band From: Santa Cruz, California Snellville, Georgia Katrina -- it’s a name freighted with some incredibly heavy history. The 2005 hurricane that decimated one of America’s proudest cities was the largest natural disaster in the history of the United States. And New Orleans hasn’t been the same since. Hoping to do their part in the ongoing process to revitalize the city, Californian dancefloor-pleasers STS9 (Sound Tribe Sector 9) have brought together a star-studded list of artists, producers, and DJs for a Katrina benefit record. All proceeds from the release will go to the New Orleans Make It Right foundation, founded by superstar philanthropist Brad Pitt after the catastrophe.
Featuring remixes from Telepath, Count Bass D, Richard Devine, Prefuse 73 and a host of others, the album is a reworking of STS9’s latest release, a collection of difficult to categorize but easy to digest beat-a-thons called Peaceblaster. Available on iTunes and via the band’s own 1320 records website, the album re-contextualizes the record’s penchant for melding the sweaty, strobe light rhythms of dance music with rock music’s wild energy. Taking their work with The Make It Right a step further, the foundation is the one and only beneficiary of all STS9’s charity efforts in 2009 – through the remix album’s proceeds, a $1 donation on every concert ticket the band sells this year, and more initiatives yet to be announced.

Bear In Heaven Genre: Psychedelic / Minimalist / Idol From: Brooklyn, New York, United States
A seed planted in the Southern US years ago (all members hail from Georgia or Alabama), Bear In Heaven began as the musical arm of Jon Philpot (also of Presocratics) way back in 1998. Time eventually brought in a slew of players, like rickety scaffolding, that grew the sound and guided the group to morph from a 6-to-5-to-4-piece. As a four-headed organism, Bear In Heaven has now found a sonic stride unlike any in their history. Freely acknowledging the importance of the number four, their second album 'Beast Rest Forth Mouth' (think "East West North South") was a conscious product of the four compass points, of the four makers, and of the inevitable confusion that manifests from that crossroad mentality: four directions could lead you anywhere and everywhere. It's the acknowledgement of what can go down at that convergence, at that dusty center, that drives Bear In Heaven and imbues the songs of 'Beast Rest Forth Mouth' with something akin to both eternal peace and nervous urgency.

Jookabox Genre: Drum & Bass / Punk / Acousmatic / Tape music From: Indianopolis, Indiana, United States
Dead Zone Boys, the third album from Jookabox (Indianapolis-born David "Moose" Adamson and Co.), scheduled for release early November 2009 is love story meets psychedelic zombie-musical.
The zombie part came easy: Moose grew up on the east side of Indianapolis in the 90s, an area plagued by constant recession, pandemic homicide, and racial tension. A few strong tribes chose to stay in the area despite constant warnings from fleeing acquaintances. It was this frantic energy and violence that infused itself into the Jookabox experience. Since then, the area struggles to revitalize and Adamson’s musical interests and excursions have crystallized into a startlingly singular and eclectic songwriting strategy. One thing is certain here. If vacant strip malls occupied only by shitdragged liquor stores and fluorescent check cashing joints are foreign to you, then Dead Zone Boys will be your guidebook, Jookabox your tour guide. This is more evident now than ever on what is sure to become a cult classic. Go Try

Wiretree, an indie-pop rock outfit from Austin, Texas, will release their second full-length, Luck, on October 20th, 2009 (the Devil's anniversary, happy anniversary Mrd Devil).
Fronted by Kevin Peroni, the quartet also includes Joshua Kaplan, Rachel Peroni and Daniel Blanchard. Hot on the heels of their debut, a self-titled EP released in 2005 under their own independent label, Cobaltworks Music, Wiretree released its first LP, Bouldin, in early 2007. The Cribs Genre: Punk / Indie From: United Kingdom In June this year the British National Party won two seats in the European Parliament. In September this year The Cribs will be releasing their latest album 'Ignore The Ignorant'.
So what connects these two events? The Cribs were so incensed that the BNP got a seat in their native Yorkshire that it inspired them to respond in the only way they know how. Through the medium of music.
“There were a bunch of titles we could have gone with including 'Ignore The Ignorant',” frontman Ryan Jarman told the NME. “Then in Yorkshire the BNP got a seat and we were like, ‘Fuck.’ It’s harsh to accept that it can happen in your town.”
If you can't wait until September to hear the album then you're in luck (kind of) because the Devil has a track from the album, which includes the legendary Johnny Marr on guitar, 'We Were Aborted' which should tide you over until the album is released.

Malcolm Middleton Genre: Alternative / Pop From: Falkirk, Scotland, United Kingdom
Waxing Gibbous is the fifth solo album from Falkirk’s Malcolm Middleton, and quite possibly his best yet. Following last year’s low-key Sleight Of Heart, this is the album Middleton was making while he took that diversion, composed from years’ worth of scribbles in notebooks, which were “chiselled and connived into being songs.”
Though self-produced, the album was recorded with the help of a few friends: it features backing vocals from King Creosote and The Pictish Trail, the piano skills of Barry from Mogwai and the honeyed vocals of Jenny Reeve (Strike The Colours). And there are surprises in store. He raps! He speaks! He plays slap bass! He sings about socks! Heck, the brilliant Zero even gets close to full-blown ‘80s hip hop.
A unique voice among the dirge of singer-songwriters, Middleton’s work balances a fragile mix of self-doubt, humour and wry observations on the human condition. Few current singer songwriters can claim to be as prolific – or focused – as Middleton in the past five years, averaging a release a year. Prone to self-deprecation (listen to any given lyric for proof), Malcolm issued a statement saying Waxing Gibbous would likely be his last solo album for a while. Needless to say, reports of his creative death have been greatly exaggerated. In fact, it’s quite the opposite.
“I am not giving up music, retiring, dying, stopping song-writing, becoming optimistic, content or anything else along these lines. All I've said is that I'd like to try some other musical projects before I return to doing more solo albums in the future. I fancy a change and I need something new. I want to do an instrumental acoustic guitar album, some electronic music, some collaborations, maybe start a new band, produce someone else etc etc.” he says. No need for obituaries then. Just enjoy this one while it’s here. The future is in Middleton’s hands. He just needs to figure out what he’s going to do with it. “The leftfield doesn’t want me because I’m too normal and I use choruses,” he muses. “The mainstream didn’t want me and still resents me for trying to ruin Christmas. Could I maybe try to sound more like James Blunt or James Morrison? Actually no, I doubt I could even try.”

Like A Stuntman are four young Germans who play eccentric weird folk electro-kraut-melodic indie rock the like of which you've never heard before.
Together since 2001, Like a Stuntman take the detuned experimental noise-pop of bands like Boyracer or Deerhoof, adhere it to Pavement-esque infectious melodies and a lazy drawl, and propel it forward on a danceable wave of Casio keyboards, and lo-fi drum-machines. The resulting sound has been described as "one part Capitol K's great one off masterpiece Pillow, one part a more interesting/less wimpoid Postal Service, or Her Space Holiday without the self obsessed lyrics, and one part the scattershot bedroom pop of Steward or early Enon".
The band, who released their first album '2005' on British indie label Highpoint Lowlife, have a new album of hypnopsych called 'Original Bedouin Culture'. Check out one of the tracks from the album below.
Brute Chorus Genre: Alternative / Garage / Folk From: London, United Kingdom The Brute Chorus, those quiffed and moustached rockabilly rebels and one of 2009’s most exciting and intriguing new bands, will be releasing their next single 'Send Me A Message' as a digital download on 5th October two weeks before their live recored and long awaited eponymous debut album.
'Send Me A Message', a glorious and brilliantly quirky slice of rockabilly with a rickety folk-blues melody, tango-influenced choruses, thudding tribal chants and lyrics purloined from various folk tales, tells the tale of the singer searching for the woman who only the night before had lain in his arms.
The forthcoming album was recorded in one heartstopping take infront of 300 of their most loyal fans at The Roundhouse’s FreeDM studios. They begged, borrowed and stole equipment from the likes of Rod Stewart, Lionel Richie and then with shaky hands, sweaty brows and a quick swig of JD it began!
