Climb In The Back With Your Head In The Clouds

Shizuka In The Sky With Diamonds
Genre: Indie / Experimental / Indie
From: Indonesia

Indonesia's Shizuka In The Sky With Diamonds, possibly the worst band name of 2009, are, for now anyway, a one-member band formed by QQ who provides guitar, mouth 'n tongue for another Indonesian band, Shoutboxblues. With Shoutboxblues drummer busy working and bassist busy finishing school QQ decided to dip his toes in the solo world hence SSD (I much prefer that to the longer version of the name).

QQ's songs are a lo-fi, DIY, synthesis of Bloc Party post punk and Strokesesque nonchalance, a musical document of the noises inside his head, heart and soul.

You get the feeling that QQ doesn't give a stuff if you like him or loathe him just as long as he gets a reaction.

The Force Is With Them

PhotonsPhotons
Genre: Indie / Alternative / Rock
From: San Francisco, California, United States

When did size become so important for North American and Canadian bands? I've been trying to convince Mrs Devil that size ain't important and now it seems that you can't be in a band if it's got less members than there are legs at an octopuses garden party.

It reminds me of the scene in ''There's Something About Mary' with the scary bloke and his seven minute abs.

"What! Nine member bands no-one's coming up with nine member bands. It's eight members. Eights the key number. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby."

Photons, who include in their ranks (see since when did bands have ranks??) a guitarist who studied in the Devil's hometown of Liverpool and used to have something going with the Wombats, are another in a lengthening list of bands that could qualify as a village in some parts of the UK. Like a lot of other orchestra sized indie bands their sound is, well, rousingly orchestral kind of like a lo-fi Arcade Fire without the ego or Polyphonic Spree without the robes, mysticism and quasi religious pomposity.

The band's new EP, which will include 'Where Were You Last Night' available for download below, is scheduled for release on May 12 through Insound with a digital format release via iTunes etc. on June 23.

Photons may the force be with them.

This Bird Has Flown

The Wooden BirdsThe Wooden Birds
Genre: Indie
From: Austin, Texas, United States

Andrew Kenny is a native Texan who, after nearly six years in Brooklyn, NY has returned to beautiful Austin, TX. He's best known as the singer/songwriter behind mellow indie favorites the American Analog Set. However, he's also performed as a guest artist with the Album Leaf, Her Space Holiday, Styrofoam, Ola Podrida, Arthur & Yu, and most recently the Broken Social Scene. His latest project, The Wooden Birds, are about to release their debut full-length 'Magnolia' upon the world May 12th.

'Magnolia' rolls by like a float down an ambient indie-rock river on a hazy, lazy summer day. Full of guitar-top drumming and beautiful harmonies, and anchored by Kenny’s percolating, vibey bass, fans of the AmAnSet will recognize his voice and song writing immediately, but the arrangements on Magnolia are more vocal and percussion heavy than anything he's done before.

You Can Ring My Bell

Like BellsLike Bells
Genre: Indie / Rock / Experimental
From: Oberlin, Ohio, United States

Q What do you get when you mix a violinist, a jazz drummer, a laptop, and a guitarist with an aptitude for unique tunings?

A. Progressive instrumentalists Like Bells a band of musical scientists experimenting with sound, discovering new, atmospheric noises that sound like music never heard before.

A little hyberbolic maybe but far from a load of bollocks!

Like Bells draws on a wide pallet of musical influences, and evokes feelings of the Dirty Three, Do Make Say Think, and Sigur Ros without ever sounding like mere facsimile.
Fluid and melodic, their complex, almost mathematical, instrumentals glimmer like newly panned gold with more atmosphere than Anfield on a Champions league semi-final. Their epic songs suffused with esoteric instrumentation are challenging without being alienating.

Like Bells Self-Titled album will be released from their musical laboratory as a Ltd Edition LP, digital download and CD on May 19th, 2009.

Fertilised or unfertilised?

The Lovely EggsThe Lovely Eggs
Genre: Alternative / Experimental / Garage
From: Lancaster, United Kingdom

The Lovely Eggs' debut album, 'If You Were Fruit', is currently cooking slowly in the oven and believe me it's good enough to win Come Dine With Me.

Since receiving an advance copy from Cherryade Records it's been following me around the country, a permanent fixture in the car's CD player.
It's a perfect mix of old favourites ('Have You Ever Heard A Digital Accordion', 'I Like Birds (But I Like Other Animals Too)' both get another run out) and soon to be favourites.

There's crackling pop so sugary it'll make your teeth rot, spunky punky tantrums, starry eyed ballads and the occasional detour down wierdo lane, all laced with the Lovely Eggs trademark wit and wisdom.
With Holly's trademark vocals, pitched somewhere between a grown up Angelica from the Rugrats, Kimya Dawson and Violet Elizabeth Bott and themes including feeding mice ('Mices'), loving animals ('I Like Birds'), teen angst ('ODeath'), lists of stuff ('America', 'Have You Ever Heard A Digital Accordion', 'Baulk Cushion'), teen love (blah blah) sex ('Sexual Cowboy') and an unhealthy obsession with cheese it's like peeking between the covers of a moody adolescent girl's diary.

For those of you familiar with the Lovely Eggs oeuvre it's not all off the wall humour and Violet Elizabeth Bott shrieking. The lo-fi beauty of 'Where's My Animal', 'The Best Moon This Side Of Town' and the title track make a good case for inclusion in a sequel to Juno and the strange 'Luna Cafe' sounds like the Moldy Peaches trying to recreate Sgt Peppers in a kindergarten while off their faces on marzipan.

With tongue firmly wedged in cheek and a knowing smile on their face The Lovely Eggs are here to brighten even the darkest of days.

Let's Go Fly A Kite

Kite In The Air
Genre: Electronic / Ambient / Pop
From:
San Francisco, California, United States

Kite in the Air is Emma Lucia on vox (Jed & Lucia) with production by Mark Reveley (WZRDZ, Meterhead, Jed & Lucia) and Mike Genius (WZRDZ.). Falling somewhere between Adult and Ladytron lead singer Emma’s haunting vocals float over the icy electro backdrop like moonlight on a frozen lake.

The band have just released their new self-titled EP which is full of electro pop classics in the making. 'The Plan' is the point at which Depeche Mode and Goldfrapp meet. The Devil's favourite track 'Filed Away' is the sound your brain makes when plunging your tongue into an ice cold slushy, it's so glacial it'll give you brain freeze while 'Take It Or Leave It' is like a snowflake melting on your tongue on a crisp and clear winters day. 'Stinger' sounds like Ladytron performing in the bar in the first Star Wars movie.

These Kite's are flying.

It's the Devil's birthday today and what better way to start than by traipsing the streets of Liverpool in the wee small hours of the morning. This wasn't however a debauched crawl around the watering holes of the Devil's home town (the Devil is after all teetotal and always tucked up safely in bed by 9:30pm every night) but a midnight walk in aid of Woodlands Hospice. Woodlands is a charitable trust based in Liverpool which provides specialist care for local people with life-threatening illnesses and supported Tom, my much loved father-in-law, who passed away four weeks ago. It felt good to give something back.

Get The Bug

Rosie & The GoldbugRosie & The Goldbug
Genre: Pop / Electro / Indie
From:
Cornwall, Southwest
United Kingdom

Rosie and the Goldbug make music that manages to be both slinky and throbby, intimate and powerful, emotional and hedonistic, not to mention, big and clever. And while this band might only be two years old, their sound and purpose are timeless; blissful dreamy electro-glam pop meant to incite dance riots!

Hailing from the west country of Cornwall, UK, Rosie & The Goldbug formed in 2007 after glamazon lead vocalist Rosie, who had been studying music in college, decided to return to her roots with the sole purpose of forming a band; “the course was all about studying mundane jazz modes and it made me realize I wanted to just write three chord pop tunes and rebel”. Fed up of fronting a band “full of belchin’ ‘n’ fartin’ lads who seemed intent on playing boring old indie-guitar wank,” Rosie enlisted her long time friend Pixie, a phenomenally talented bass player and upon a chance encounter with mesmerizing drummer Plums, the band was born. Rosie & The Goldbug are a razor-sharp three pronged trio who are proving themselves quite the musical force to be reckoned with.

Having only been together for two years, they have achieved abundant success, being handpicked as main support for pop legend Cyndi Lauper’s European tour and boasting of support from Radio 1, Radio 2, XFM and 6Music amongst others. Past videos can be found playlisted on Q, E4, 4 Music and NME TV. Their self titled album was released in the UK to much acclaim. Currently on the cover of Artrocker Magazine (the magazines fastest selling issue ever!) and heating up the charts overseas, the band is beyond ready to tear up the United States from East to West, and will without a doubt leave us desperately wanting more...

Anchored Down In Anchorage?

The Wagner Logic
Genre: Indie / Shoegaze / Alternative From: Kasilof, Alaska, United States

Type "famous bands from Alaska" into Google and and it'll come up blank. Despite The Devil's extensive research the only 'prominent' musicians that I can find are Jewel (who was actually born in Utah and her myspace site claims is from Stephenville, Texas United States) , Mary Youngblood (a traditional Aleut flautist!!!! who lists Fair Oaks, California, United States as her home on Myspace) , folk singer-songwriter Libby Roderick, metal/post hardcore band 36 Crazyfists and the group Pamyua. Even the clearly underemployed head of the Alaskan music industry would struggle to convince anyone that this constitutes an impressive list!

Add to that unimpressive list the much more impressive The Wagner Logic who sprung from the ghetto of Kasilof, Alaska in 2000 with a hunting bag full of off-beat lo-fi psychedelia that's warm enough to melt the Columbia glacier and as jagged as a cave of stalactites.

This is one band that won't be anchored down in Anchorage.

Indie / Powerpop / Folk Rock
From: Brighton, United Kingdom

Nu-twee favourites, Foxes! (first featured on the Devil's blog back in July last year, Here Comes Summer) are on their way back with a brand spanking new single Who Killed Rob? scheduled for release on 1st June on CatCutter Records.

The single, taken from the band's forthcoming debut album ‘Boxes’, is an uplifting tale of a friend, knocked from his bike in a hit and run accident, who wakes from a coma after five days to find that his parents have bought him a dog.

It's sweeter than a

Classic & Melodic

Arietta
Genre: Indie / Pop / Progressive
From: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

What do you do when you've outgrown your teen angst? Where do you go when you’re forced to stop being mad at the world and start living in it? What comes after Smells Like Teen Spirit in your existential playlist? For all the bands screaming at kids out there, who speaks to the twenty-somethings who are just as desperate for a relatable voice?

Arietta might not have the answers, but they’re asking all the same questions. On their debut album, Migration, the band doesn’t attempt to solve the problems of post-adolescence, they simply address the situation. They are not the light at the end of the tunnel but rather the hand guiding you through it, with songs conveying both the confidence and the confusion, the elation and the aggression, the candor and the warmth of today’s young adults

“Is this what I’ve become when I’m driven to begin?” muses vocalist Tyler Johnston on the record’s lead track, Old Habits Die Young, questioning the work-all-day/party-all-night routine followed by so many young men and women. From here on, the songs on Migration systematically assess and deconstruct life in your twenties; from the apathetic frustration of Home. Friday. Midnight to the inspirational closer, We Were All Invincible At One Point.

The six-piece find themselves disenfranchised even in their hometown of Toronto due to their unique sound. Equal parts pop songwriting and technical musicianship, Arietta - consisting of Johnston, guitarists Sean Ramesbottom and Brian Craig, bassist Kyle Smith, drummer Shehzaad Jiwani and multi-instrumentalist Patrick McCormack - are impossible to pigeon-hole, and their influences run the gamut from Minus The Bear’s robotic precision to Moneen’s stratospheric hooks.

In a city where older cliques monopolize every viable outlet, the sextet represent a younger generation of musicians bound not by genres or scenes but by mutual appreciation of innovative music. Though the band has helped forge a community with such disparate acts as Dinosaur Bones, Great Bloomers and Oh No Forest Fires, the urge to branch outside the crowded city and blaze new trails permeates much of Migration’s lyrical content.

“Let’s all get away from holding ourselves down,” proclaims Johnston on Northearned, a driving, piano-led rocker that is as angst-ridden as it is melodic. As the record’s title implies, the sense of exploration and escape is palpable on Migration, and the music reflects this wanderlust. The band incorporates vastly different styles - jazzy brushes on A Prolonged Sense Of Longing, countrified lap-steel on It’s An Uphill Battle And It’s All Downhill From Here, sweeping violins on ...So I’m Going Overboard On Taking My Final Bowl - yet weaves them seamlessly into a cohesive sound that is distinctly Arietta.

As progressive as the band may be, Arietta harkens back to a time when music was more about songwriting and musicianship than ringtones and record sales. Their willfully experimental tendencies bring to mind the great songwriters of old, but their brazen naivety represents youth in its purest form. It isn’t the solution to our problems, but with Migration, Arietta have provided the soundtrack for us to begin answering our own questions.

Song For Drella

ImprintImprint
Genre: Gothic / Experimental / Post punk
From: London and South East, United Kingdom

Imprint is the pseudonym of London based experimental electronic artist Sin D’rella (itself a pseudonym I'm guessing). Her thoughful electronica is as moody as a gang of Goths who've lost their eyeliner and darker than a moles pocket.

She is already causing quite a stir particularly with a chilling version of Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' which made Peter Hook's my hairs stand on end. Of the other tracks on her Myspace site 'Reptilian' (provided for download below) is a curious mix of gothic grandeur, Billy Holiday and Toyah Wilcox, her alternative version of 'America The Beautiful' is controversial and unlikely to gain her an invite to sing at the Republican Congress.

Sin has recently completed her debut album 'The Wisdom Out of The Wound' which she will be unleashing in May 2009 through her own newly created label Feral Intuition Records. The album will come in a metal tin in a satin bag and, according to Sin, should smell of her. So n

And The Pacemakers?

JerriJerri
Genre: Classical Opera and Vocal
(they claim)
From: Saint-Etienne, France

Formed by members of French oddbods Angil & Hiddntracks (see blog post from January, Cryptic Odd Boddry From) and contemplative instrumental hippity hopsters Deschannel Jerri have unleashed one of the tracks of the year onto an unsuspecting and totally oblivious public.

Said track 'Go Fight Your War' is a stereo rap sparring session between two Mike Skinneresque (sans cheeky cockney vocal affectations) 'singers' with a chorus that once inside your head claims squatters rights and refuses to leave. The song starts slow before building to a crescendo culminating with a
snatch of lo-fi electro that sounds like they sampled a space invaders machine. 'Go Fight Your War' is the sound of the KLF fronted by Mike Skinner and stripped of the techno rave influence or a 21st Century Specials brought up on rap rather than ska.

'Go Fight Your War'
is sure to feature in the Devil's top ten tunes of the year and is a real contender for track of the year. Go listen to the track below and then please tell your friends and ask them to tell their friends (especially if they're big wigs in the ol' music biz). It's Grammars Party Tonight

We The TheyWe The They
Genre: Indie / Americana / Soul From: Roscoe, New York, United States

What do Jack Bauer (well ok Keifer Sutherland) & Blaine Thurier of The New Pornographers have in common? They're both apparently fans of We The They!

So, who are they?! We The They proudly waves the flag of a modern indie rock band heavily influenced by such vintage staples as The Beach Boys, The Kinks, The Beatles, and The Mamas and The Papas and remind me of one hit wonders from the late 70s The Headboys. You can hear those influences in We The They's music, especially in the harmonies. Formed by singer Robert Wayne in the summer of 2001, the band also consists of Matthew Tyler(guitar/vocals), Peter Pantina(bass/vocals), Michael Romeo(drums/vocals), and Anthony Crisano(keys/vocals).

In the early days the band practiced their art in a barn in New York surrounded by horses and a very questionable dog that they claim could have been a wolf. It was here that the group would practice through freezing winters and unquenchable summers to begin work on what would eventually be their first record, 'This Is What's Coming'. This 8 song EP included the opening track, "Start the Hop" which quickly began receiving radio attention throughout the country.

Hitting the road in support of the album, the band eventually met up with Producer Roger Greenawalt (Ben Kweller, The Pierces, Adam Green) and began work in the studio on a 3 song EP, The Shabby Road Sessions. The limited release of 1,000 copies quickly sold out in the U.S., where it has since been released digitally.

We The They have performed with such acts as Adam Green and Guster. Catch them live in a town near you when they go on tour this summer before finishing up their full length, set to release in Fall of 2009.

All That Glitters Is Not Gary

The Gary’s origins are on the Comal River, July 2008. Paul Warner paddled over to Dave Norwood and suggested they start a band called The Gary. Dave saw no reason why they shouldn’t play in a band called The Gary, and so it began. It should be noted that both were several beers into their river journey, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. The beer-goggle phenomenon apparently applies to band names, as well.

A week or two later, Trey Pool suggested he come and play some guitar. The band was complete. Songs were written and the band checked into East Austin’s infamous Hot Tracks recording studio in November to record the seven-song
'Chub EP'. They began playing shows with bands such as DD/MM/YYYY, Medications, Maserati, and Grant Hart of Husker Du. The band began exchanging prose and verse about a fictive stoner ne’er-do-well named Gary, which will soon be made available in chapbook format. Suddenly, being called The Gary didn’t seem like such a bad thing, after all.

The Gary’s sound is as rooted in a sense of place as it is in their influences (Silkworm, Guided By Voices, Chicago post-rock, New Zealand noise-rock, etc.) Lyrics and song delivery convey the sense of defeat accompanied by “getting by” in their Austin/Central Texas surroundings... ...not to mention the unfathomable heat that drives us into rivers and causes us to form bands with peculiar names.

Wrap Up Warm

Winter GlovesWinter Gloves
Genre: Healing & Easy Listening
From: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

April may not seem the right time to get out the Winter Gloves but when they are as hot as Montreal synth loaded quartet Winter Gloves then sweaty palms are a price worth paying.

The band started as a solo project for the grandly named Charles F. Vincent Chalifour ex of little known
Quebec City band Lady Grey before a trio of friends were drafted in to up the ante.

Winter Gloves are in the midst of a short North American Tour with Thunderheist in support of their celebrated debut full-length album, 'about a girl', on Paper Bag Records. Released after a three song digital-only 'Let Me Drive' EP, the album features these same three songs polished to perfection along with a handful of other three minute pop songs.

The band have also recorded their own unique, and some may say sacrilegious, tribute to the late Kurt Cobain in lieu of the recent anniversary of his death with a reinterpretation of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' equipped with dance beat and scary kids chorus. It's got all the ingredients of a great cover version; an interesting new artist, a great song and it's covered in a way that makes it a decent track in it's own right. It's the best cover version I've heard so far this year and that's because it brings a new perspective to a classic track.

Here they are now entertainers.

Losing My Religion?

Worried About Satan
Genre: Techno / Down-tempo / Electronica
From: United Kingdom

Worried About Satan (should this band be on the Devil's blog??) mix electronica, post rock, techno into slow moving, dense soundscapes that are as close as you'll get to music in it's pure liquid form.

The Worried By Satan sound is meditative, experimental, mathematical, and bordering on the religious. It's the sound a glacier makes as it melts, the sound of a baby taking it's first breath, the sound of dust blowing on the breeze. It's exquisite, it's beautiful, it's just like sleeping gas, it's so ethereal.

Comparisons are meaningless but, since you asked think Autechre, Tricky at his trippiest and OMD at their most experimental

Icarus HimselfIcarus Himself
Genre: Minimalist / Pop / Electroacoustic From: Madison, Wisconsin, United States

Nick Whetro is Icarus Himself. After leaving Northern Indiana in 2004, to relocate to Madison, Wisconsin, Nick formed National Beekeepers Society (a sort of a slacker rock/garage pop group) as an outlet for his prolific songwriting. The band released two albums 'Self-Titled' in ‘07 and 'Pawn Shop Etiquette' in ‘08 and, as far as I can tell, are still extant.

For his solo flight (see what I did there Icarus/flight these blogs aren't just thrown together you know!) Nick has taken the refined distortion of the National Beekeepers and combined it with his wry and quirky vocals to make a basement tape beauty of an album
'Coffins' which has been compared to the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel and Beirut.

As might be expected with a title like
'Coffins' and track titles such as '35 to Life', 'Coffins' and 'Scars' (which is nothing one of the tracks that didn't quite make the album is called 'Amputee' which you can check out at the Icarus Himself myspace site or in the National Beekeeper Society video below) this ain't a party record. It's The Final Meltdown

The Hot MeltsThe Hot Melts
Genre: Rock / Pop
From: Liverpool, United Kingdom

Wirral (or as we scousers say d'ose from over de water) foursome, The Hot Melts have had an incredibly busy last 12 months. They've torn up and down the nation's motorways and are currently on tour with Eagles of Death Metal straight after returning from a fruitful SXSW. They've found success with two unique 50s influenced punk/rock singles and are now set to get even busier, with the news that the band are releasing their self-titled debut album on June 22nd. The imaginatively titled 'The Hot Melts' will be preceded by third single 'Big Baby' out on June 15th, and is destined to be yet another Melts jukebox classic!

Will Bayliss (singer/songwriter), Jack Prince (drums), Jonny Green (guitar),and Jamie Otsa (bass) were the first British band to sign a worldwide deal with Epitaph Records' UK based imprint Wonderland Records, wooing the legendary punk label back in 2007 with their thrashy guitar driven pop. Shortly after label and band were united, The Melts flew out to Chicago to cut their debut with the help of Marc Mcclusky (Farewell, Hit The Lights), and landed back on UK soil with a 13 track masterpiece!

With musical influences ranging from Weezer to Eddie Cochran, singer Will Bayliss also finds inspiration in Wes Anderson films, the laugh out loud comedy mixed with the underlying depression in his films are echoed throughout The Melts album. 'Happiness Is A Weakness' is a perfect example; an upbeat, chirpy track which opens with the lines 'I'm obsessed with sadness, I embrace the blues...'. Mixing cynical observations with the buoyant and cheery is also found in 'Fun' (a track about 'not having any'!). Upcoming single 'Big Baby' opens with a-Strokes alike riff, and pulls you in with its soaring harmonies and addictive hooks. All in all, this is a British gem of an album and not to be missed.

They Got The Power

Genre: Industrial / Gothic / Alternative
From: Chicago, Illinois United States

Grauwelt is Robert Krums, an electronic artist who as a teenager saturated himself with the music of Wax Trax recording artists like KMFDM and Ministry, as well as earlier electronic groups like Cabaret Voltaire and Depeche Mode. 'Obsolete' his new album contains elements of hip-hop, early techno, and even drum and bass can be heard occasionally emerging from the cacophony of muffled kick drums, fuzzed-out guitars and violent snares that comprise Grauwelt's primary palette.

Of the two tracks provided for download courtesy of the Devil 'Warfare' sounds like Snap's 'I've Got The Power' reinterpreted by Skinny Puppy while 'Brutality' sounds like a postcard from Guantanamo Bay courtesy of Test Dept.

Julien AkleiJulien Aklei
Genre: Indie / Alternative / Folk
From: Louisville, Kentucky, United States

With influences including unicorns, crystals, light pink stones (especially rose quartz). Magicians, Saints, Gandhi, Mother Teresa. Jasmines & Tuberoses, Ylang-ylangs, willow trees, lavenders & roses you can guess that the Julien Aklei sound isn't exactly death metal!

No, as you'd expect from the list of influences it's twee folk that'd embarrass a fey hippy with Julien sounding like Joanna Newsom sans vocal affectations.

Listen To The Voice Of Brooklyn

The Path Of Least Resistance
Genre: Electronica / Alternative / Electro
From: Brooklyn, New York
United States

There was a time, about 30 years ago, when the Path of Least Resistance sound would have been called the future. In 2009 their raw, sparse electronics, glacial synths and dark subject matter are like telegrams from the industrial outskirts of the British punk scene of the late 70s, or, more precisely, Sheffield.

With a name taken from an early Human League track (I'm assuming that's where they got their name as the coincidence is too great) it doesn't come as a great surprise that the 3 tracks on their myspace site are part homage, part re-boot to the League.

You know I hate to ask but are friends electric? Oh yes they are.
