King Of PrussiaGenre: Lyrical / Indie / Folk
From: Barcelona y Athens, Ga., Barcelona, Spain
King Of Prussia are an expansionist troupe with aspirations of global domination. Check out their myspace site for a collection of songs that deserve to be knighted and given the keys to the Prussian capital Königsberg (look it up on wikipedia, who says blogs can't be educational).
The quite awesome 'Misdaventures of the Campaign Kids' is up there with the best songs that have turned up on the Devil's doorstep this year and a contender for the prestigious Devil's top ten of the year. It's a splash of colour in an otherwise dark and grey winter with the power to raise a smile from a depressive at a funeral.
Of the other tracks on the site 'The Doctor and the Mathematicians' recalls the faux psychedelia of XTC offshoot The Dukes Of Stratosphear at their most reflective. 'Terrarium' sounds like the missing link between The Flaming Lips and Steely Dan, tuning up for the Monterey Pop Festival, while the gorgeous 'Spain In The Summertime' is another brilliant song which manages to sound retro and modern, the sort of trick that usually only musical magicians like Belle & Sebastian can pull off.
'Cheerleaders' is an odd confection. A car crash between traditional Americana and psychedelia that can't quite make up it's mind what it wants to be. I hope the King won't order my beheading when I say it's the weakest track on the Myspace site and a detour from the norm that suggests their musical sat nav is on the blink.
Unfortunately, if their latest EP The Time of Great Forgetting (Kindercore), is an indication they're relying a little too heavily on their broken sat nav which is leading down a well trodden country road that's little more than a blind alley. Stick to the storming 60s pop pastiches guys or your country will rise up and you'll find yourself dethroned.
Once they get their sat nav fixed you better lock yourself in your air raid shelter (what do you mean you haven't got one) with your iPod because King of Prussia will be lighting the blue touchpaper for the Prussian Revolution.

Fear not my wise friend. The new full length CD is almost finished. It will put this great band over the top. Just you wait and see.
