Sealed With A Kiss

Her Lips Might ShatterHer Lips Might Shatter
Genre: Emotronic / Gothic / Pop
From: Los Angeles, California, United States

What happened about 20 years ago? Was there a fiendish experiment sponsored by Gary Numan to infect young girls with an electro virus to check the incubation period. Well the results of the experiment are there for all to see with the current torrent of female artists experimenting with electro, La Roux, Little Boots, Lady GaGa, Ladyhawke all, for some strange reason, beginning with the letter 'L' . Could that be an unforeseen side effect are we about to be plagued by female electronicista's all begining with the letter 'L' in an outbreak similar to the Strokes lead 'bands that begin with The' pandemic of the early years of the 21st Century? Well the fantastically monickered Her Lips Might Shatter is another female electronista but without the 'L' based side effects!

Her Lips Might Shatter is Kiev-born, Houston-raised, Boston-schooled, Los Angeles-based female producer Alisa Nizhniy ex contortionist (check out the photo) and other half of ghettotech, emotronic project PseudoNecrophile. She has just released 'Heads Fall Like Balloons' her debut EP.

'My Mind Is Tricking Me' is run of the mill, common denominator, chart oriented electro dance that could have been churned out by anyone of the aforementioned artists that begin with 'L'. It's so mainstream it could be a Girls Aloud b-side and therefore could easily be a massive hit. But, thankfully (well for me if not her bank manager) it's not typical of Her Lips Might Shatter. 'Taxi Cabs' is Depeche Mode for the 'artists that begin with L' era while '1929', the Devil's favourite track on the EP, is Ladytron (maybe the mother of the 'artists that begin with L') just after the thaw.

U
nfortunately the EP doesn't include the best track on her myspace site 'Dirty Girl' a Peaches meets M.I.A. masterpiece which, as the name suggests, is a down deep and dirty track, as horny as a three balled tomcat. It's the sound that you might hear seeping from an underground club at 2am. The type of club you'd sell your soul to join.

Overall the Devil has mixed feeling about the EP. Like the curates egg 'Heads Like Balloons' is good in parts. There are times, for example on the mildly annoying 'Come Shake My Hands', when I wish she'd ditch the vocoder which makes her sound too much like Cher's trendy emotronic granddaughter. If 'Heads Fall Like Balloons' was slimmed down to 5 tracks by ditching 'My Mind Is Tricking Me' and 'Come Shake My Hands' was replaced by her best track 'Dirty Girl' it would be a far stronger release.

Her Lips Might Shatter isn't quite ready to shatter the world. Maybe if she dropped the Her and called herself Lips Might Shatter the power of the 'L' may propel her to world bestriding stardom.
