I'm assuming that 18 Carat Love Affair, containing amongst their members former 586 singer songwriter Steven Horry and Subliminal Girl Jim Rhesu, have taken their name from the Associates song of the same name which earns them bonus points from me.
The band apparently formed in late 2008 after a protracted argument about the best member of Girls Aloud, which shatters the myth a little and reduces the bonus points for being named after an Associates track. Why couldn't they have got together after a protracted argument over obscure indie tracks from the early 80s or which label would win a race between Sarah Records, Creation and Cherry Red?
Thankfully the music goes a long way to resurrecting the band in the Devil's estimation after the Girls Aloud faux pas. It's the effervescent electro pop cousin of a family line that includes The Pet Shop Boys, The Human League and Prefab Sprout. If the Pet Shop Boys had released 'Constructs' it would be there best track since 'West End Girls'. Sorry correct that it would their best track ever!
18 Carat Love Affair are the real thing, there's never been a better time to return to the gold standard.
