No Shame, No Disgrace It's...
The Shondes
Genre: Rock / Classical / Indie From: Brooklyn, New York, United States
Type the words Jewish queercore into google and the only band that you'll turn up are Brooklyn quartet The Shondes (you will, however, need to press return otherwise you'll get nothing!).
This could mean that Jewish queercore is a genre too far or that The Shondes, who take their name from the Yiddish word for "shame" or "disgrace", are the only band brave enough to nail their colours to the Jewish queercore flag. Either way the tag is in danger of distracting from their astute synthesis of traditional Jewish folk, classical music, and punk rock. Their sound has often been compared to Sleater-Kinney and Rasputina but their audacious aggression, riot grrrl radicalism and pure power is closer in spirit to the fierce intensity of The Gits.
Their album 'The Red Sea' was released almost 12 months ago so if you missed it first time round go check it out at the links below you know you want to.
