Never Judge A Book By It's Name

Genre: Experimental / Alternative / Rock
From: Holland
Two elder statespeople of the original punk scene Kat (Ex ex of Dutch anarcho punks The Ex) and Jon (Langford ex Mekons) have joined forces to form KatJonBand. Come on guys taking the first three letter of your names and adding them to the word band is about as uncreative as it gets. Luckily for us they've put more effort into the songs on their self titled debut than they did in choosing a name.
The album stays true to the punk ideals of their progenitors nailing the duo's political views to the mast expounding their thoughts on the in Iraq, the impacts of globalisation, greed, class and patriotism.
If this makes it sound worthy and kinda like a punk version of the International Marxist Group's manifesto don't worry, it's not. Yes it doff's a cap to it's punk heritage but it's never hectoring. It also offer more variety of styles than you'd expect.
The quasi psychedelia of 'Green Apples' sounds uncannily like an art punk take on Jefferson Airplane's classic 'White Rabbit' while 'Do It' is stripped back to basics rock 'n roll that owes more to the sound of the duo's progenitors.
So Kat and Jon may be saddled with an embarrasingly contrived name but they've delivered an exciting and challenging album proving that you should never judge a book by it's name.
