Forget the credit crunch, forget the world economic problems, forget the threat of global meltdown and get lost in the exquisite, flawless sounds of Soft Targets (not to be confused, as I was, by Chicago's Soft Targets). Manic songbird Jesse Corry has emerged bleary eyed from a self imposed “bedroom exile” to create a gorgeously compelling set of breezy, rocking psych pop tracks on new album 'Heavy Rainbow'.
The album is grown up mellow pop without a trace of the irony that litters the current scene. 'Surrendering Slow' is beautifully atmospheric with a melody that recalls the early albums of Prefab Sprout while the mature easy listening of 'Off Season' recalls the more sophisticated later Prefab Sprout albums. But it's not all Sproutish sophisto pop, the jaunty, upbeat 'Calm Me Down' tips a glitter strewn top-hat and feather boa to the grooving glam of T-Rex and the stirring string draped 'Four Letter Friend' couldn't be more Beatles like if it had a mop top and scouse accent.
So put your feet up turn the Ipod wheel to 'Heavy Rainbow' and leave the torments of a troubled world behind. Soft Targets a safer alternative to drugs.
