Cute, nice, sweet, innocent, honest, twee; all words that todays music journalists tend to deploy as terms of abuse rather than endearment. Reading a review in 2008 that describes a band as cute or sweet is just about as damning as faint praise gets.
Well then The Smittens, ( not to be confused with Aussie folksters The Smitten) the name does give the game away a little, better get ready for buckets full of faint praise as there really is no other way to describe their brand of indiepop. Christ they even had the nerve to christen one of their albums 'Gentlefication Now!'. Have this band got a death wish or what. This is twee with a capital T, this is cuddlecore without the core, this is anorak pop with the hood firmly up.
Muscially the Smittens are the missing link between the cartoon garage pop of 60's fictional popsters The Archies and the shambling lo-fi indie of The Vaselines.
It's difficult to escape a Flight of the Conchords style parody here when confronted by tracks like 'I Hate Vermont' (available for download at Indie MP3) bemoaning the lack of good record stores, bookstores and gay bars and the self explanatory 'Doomed, Lo-Fi and In Love' bemoaning, well, being, doomed, lo-fi and in love! The band's third album 'The Coolest Thing About Love' is due out anytime soon and is available for pre-order from the bands label or Amazon (see below). Unfortunately the Devil hasn't received a copy to review but I'm sure it's full to bursting with cute lo-fi anthems on the joys of love 'n stuff.
