Flying In From Canada...

The Paper CranesThe Paper Cranes
Genre: Pop / Pop / Pop
From: Victoria, British Columbia Canada

The Paper Cranes (not to be confused with Australia's Paper Crane ), a husband and wife act from Victoria, Canada, create patchwork pop that's as infectious as a bite from an infected zombie. Front-man, Ryan McCullagh's vocals are pitched somewhere between Kevin Rowlands (Dexys Midnight Runners), Robert Smith (The Cure) and Steve Bays (Hot Hot Heat, apparently it's obligatory to reference Hot Hot Heat as they hail from the same area, but it's true his voice does bear more than a passing resemblance). Unsurprisingly the Paper Cranes sound like all these bands plus the best bits from Arcade Fire 'Funeral' and the raggle taggle gypsy bits from Madison's Pale Young Gentlemen.

The bands latest album 'Halcyon Days' is a party album (if wakes are your idea of a good time) with a much energy as a box of Monkeys with ADHD. It feels like a nostalgic, if somewhat melancholic, trip through the best of the new-wave of the late 70s that makes you want to jump up and down and wave your arms in the air like a windmill with dementia.
