Put On Your Dancing Shoes For The...
HotChaCha
Genre: Soul / Indie / 2-step
From: Cleveland, Ohio, United States
From their frivolous name to the tongue-in-cheek lyrics from it's hard to take Cleveland's HotChaCha seriously. Like fellow femi punk jokesters The Coathangers their earnestly po-faced post punk sounds ever so serious. But scratch the surface and there's an odd-ball sense of humour lurking beneath the layers of noise.
The title of their new EP, 'Rifle, I Knew You When You Were Just A Pistol' provides the merest hint that there may be more to these girls than initially meets the eye. The case is strengthened when the serious sounding alt girl punk of 'Ja'ccuse' breaks into a chorus of 'ja'ccuse your shoes' (at least that's what it sounds like) and they claim that their influences are, and I quote, 'guys with one arm, guys with twitches, guys with speech defects' It's case closed when you check out the video of their hilarious karaoke version of 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'
Unfortunately the other tracks on the EP, 'Heidi Was Never Good' and 'Wir Tanzen' are sung in German and therefore any humour is completely lost on someone who still hasn't quite mastered English.
HotChaCha inhabit a world where The Slits and the The Raincoats can co-exit in peaceful harmony with Weird Al Jankovic and The Bangles a world where post punk doesn't have to equal po-faced, a world where feminism and humour are not mutually exclusive.
