Mighty Oaks Will Grow From...

The Acorn blend gentle folky indie rock with world music kinda like Sufjan Stevens covering Paul Simon's 'Gracelands'. I have to confess the sombre and subdued tone and laidback mellow vibe of their new album 'Glory Hope Mountain' left me a little cold.
The album, which tells the story of Acorn songwriter Rolf Klausner's mother from her early life in Honduras to her immigration to Montreal, rarely ventures out of it's self imposed comfort zone. Listening to the album I was constantly urging the band to break out of the suffocating complacency that hangs over the album like a fart in a lift.
At it's best 'Glory Hope Mountain' has a rare beauty that takes your breath away (check out the aptly named 'Hold Your Breath') but all too often it sounds a little too self satisfied and safe. An ultimately unsatisfying album that doesn't fulfil the promise of previous Acorn efforts. Hopefully having got the folk concept album out of the way the next Acorn album will build on the wonderful alt folk of previous efforts 'Blankets' and 'The Pink Ghosts'.
