In the ephemeral disposable music scene of the 21st Century it's all too easy to forget that fashion is temporary but class is permanent. Husband and wife duo Saint Bernadette may not be the most fashionable band around, they may not be the coolest kids on the block, and they aren't the Devil's usual cup of tea, but there is no doubting that they ooze class from every pore.
Debut album 'In The Ballroom' , released in October last year, received a generally positive reaction from the more discerning critics who compared it to Motown or early Atlantic releases. While I can see why the comparisons have been made to me the album sounds more like the chic younger sibling of Sade and Portishead. In the wrong hands this could so easily have ended up as little more than the bland painfully plastic soul seen each week on X Factor or American Idol. Thank God then for Meredith DiMenna's angelically pure and intensely soulful voice which gives Saint Bernadette sufficient edge to steer well clear of the perils of the middle of the road.
The retro alchemy of smoky lounge, jazz and blues of Saint Bernadette will unfortunately appeal to the chinless bankers and the wine bar crowd and will no doubt make fickle NME journalists froth at the mouth and seek comfort in their Ting Tings remixes. But don't let that put you off. Anyone who appreciates good music will put their prejudices to one side and seek comfort in the arms of Saint Bernadette.
