Metal is one of those genres that has never appealed to me. Rightly or wrongly I associate the genre with overly macho posturing, sexist portrayal of women and an unbearable over reliance on bludgening guitar histrionics over lyrical intelligence just leave me cold. Like all musical genres the odd track or band surfaces from the metal genre that overcomes my prejudice. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', 'Touch Me I'm Sick' by Mudhoney, Marilyn Manson cover of 'Tainted Love', Since You've Been Gone' by Rainbow, Papa Roach 'Last Resort', Black Sabbath 'Paranoid', Smoke on the Water' by Deep Purple, KoRn's 'Freak on a Leash', 'Wait & Bleed' by Slipknot and Soundgarden 'Black Hole Sun' are all considered to be variations on the metal theme, all of them are great songs and none of them conform to my expectations of the genre. It's tracks like these that occasionally make me question my irrational prejudice against the genre.
So when I received an email titled 'New Dead Child track. Metal!' my finger hovered over the delete button but for some reason I decided to read it instead. Boy am I glad I did because contained within the mail was a link to 'Sweet Chariot' an MP3 from Dave Pajo's latest band Dead Child.

'Sweet Chariot' is a lacerating slice of furiously raw, earthquake generating, thrash metal that stomps into your brain like a dinosaur in steel-capped Doc Martins. It's an ungodly metal racket that's as heavy as an obese hippo and makes Black Sabbath sound like a room full of napping new borns.
Dead Child could be single-handedly responsible for the return of the brain damaging art of head banging and taking the ancient craft of the air guitar into another dimension.
