I Predict...

Formed following the implosion of the promising Fell City Girl, Oxford quartet The Winchell Riots, who take their name from the Philip Roth novel 'The Plot Against America', are about to release their debut 4 track EP via the impressively named Andrew The Great Records.

Opening track the
Mansunesque (and that's a huge compliment from this self confessed Mansun fan) 'Histories' is by far and away the best track on the EP. It's a sweeping, soaring sonic assault that gets the old spidey senses tingling and well worth the ticket price. The other two tracks (the fourth being a remix of 'Histories' which strips it off everything that makes it a great song) the slightly pedestrian 'The Man Who Mapped The Oceans' and the heart strings tugging 'I'd Lower You Down' suffer in comparison to the grandeur of 'Histories' meandering by without really registering on the Devil's musical richter scale. I'm surprised that these two tracks were chosen ahead of the much stronger Suede like 'Kandahar Road' (check out the Winchell Riot's myspace site). Maybe they're saving that for the second single!

It's early to tell but I do wonder whether the Winchell Riots are one of those bands that, like Michael Owen once he left the mighty Reds, lose a little of their spark when they lose their pace.

Mark down as a hugely promising debut on the strength of the majestic 'Histories' and hope that theres more of those in the Winchell Riot's kitbag.
