Softly They Fall, Where Do They Go...

What is it with Portland and Snowflakes? First there was Miss Massive Snowflake (Chill Out With...) now the Devil reintroduces you to The Pink Snowflakes (first featured in September 2006 Third Wave Of Psychedelia Part Three). Is snow such a rare commodity in Portland?

The Pink Snowflakes have been incubating their warped acid psych pop since the summer of 2001 and have just released their latest wierd and wonderful offspring onto an unsuspecting world. There aren't many review on the world wide web yet but most of those that I've seen for the new album 'Sun Chasing' mention a perceived similarity to
The Flaming Lips, but there is much more to the Pink Snowflakes than mere Lip synching. 'Sun Chasing' is as close as you'll get to a psychedelic various artists album from one band. It's as if the Pink Snowflakes have set up their own branch of the Nuggets franchise.

The album takes in all the various tributaries of the psychedelic river from the Barrettesque whimsy of 'Like Ice Cream' , to the new psych sound of fellow Portlanders Dramady on 'Summer Feels'; from the Echo & The Bunnymen style neo psych of 'Closest Thing' to the slacker psych of 'Caves!!!!' to the mind expanding wig out garage psych of the 13 minute epic 'The Queen of Heaven's Comin Down' track; from the The Electric Prunes apeing psych fuzz 'After School Choir Practice' to The White Stripes like sentimental garage balladry of 'It Was The Apples' (a 'We're Going To Be Friends' on different drugs). It's almost as if the band went through their obviously psychedelic heavy record collection choosing bands at random to impersonate . Tonight Matthew I'm going to be The Electric Prunes. In many ways it reminds me of the The Dukes of Stratosphear homage to 1960s pop psych 'Chips from the Chocolate Fireball: An Anthology' .

'Sun Chasing' is deliriously edgy and accessible psych pop from the outskirts of a psychopathic mind.
