Hand It To...
Hanne Hukkelberg
Genre: Alternative / Electronica / Experimental
From: Oslo, Norway
Saddled with the convenient, but not entirely accurate, tag of the Norwegian Joni Mitchell, Oslo's Hanne Hukkelberg draws on influences far removed from Joni. Yes she's female, yes she's a solo artist, yes she sings sparse, lo-fi folksy, jazz flecked songs of love, loss and seduction but one look at the instrumental credits on her albums and you know that Hanne is a Joni from a parallel, and slightly twisted, universe. I've done a little research and cannot find any references to amplified egg slicers, Remington 20 typewriters, trash cans or "tea strainer guitars" on any Joni Mitchell albums. I also don't recall any Joni Mitchell tracks that sound like Joanna Newsom singing whilst typing her memoirs and playing with an old Sega Megadrive ('North Wind')
Joni Mitchell comparison aside the tracks on Hanne's myspace site are beautifully crafted intimate, ambient folkatronica songs that hint at an IPod loaded with Coco Rosie , Eden era Everything But The Girl, Joanna Newsom, Sigur Ros and Mum .
Hanne will be performing at SXSW in March and she is a contender for find of the festival.
