The Monolators Looking Good On The Train

The Monolators

The Monolators
Genre: Punk / Psychedelic / Indie
From: Los Angeles, California, United States

All those White Stripes, comparisons (ok maybe I was the only one making them but I've seen the error of my ways) can be consigned to the dustbin of music history because Devil's favourites, The Monolators, are no longer a bass free, drums and guitar, husband and wife duo. Yep, you guessed it, the band have expanded their musical template with the recruitment of a bass player, Andrew Bollas. The band have also been busy over the past 12 months and have become parent like figures in the burgeoning Silverlake/Echo Park scene of Los Angeles helping many up and coming local acts book shows at their monthly First Friday's at Mr. T's Bowl. They have also found the time to share the stage with local successes Airborne Toxic Event and Castledoor as well as acts such as Peter and the Wolf .

As if that news wasn't enough they are also about to release 'You Look Good On The Train' their latest four track EP. Clocking in at less than 14 minutes the new EP is as rowdy and rumbunctious as ever with Eli's unique yelping shouting vocals recalling those of Hutch Harris of The Thermals with the merest hint of Jonathan Richman. The catchy and endearing Jarvis Cockeresque title track is the stand-out on the EP with it's tale of a verbally abusive and somewhat insane woman who Eli romanticises because she 'looks good on the train'.

Combining the spirit of punk with the sheer unrestrained power of late 50's rock 'n roll (the aforementioned 'You Look Good On The Train') with child-like, allegorical narratives ('Eagle Fighting Zebra') this will surely be the release that brings the Monolators to a much wider audience and if it doesn't then I'll eat my spleen.
