Move Zig

Move Zig
Genre: Uncategorisable
From: Brighton, United Kingdom
It has taken some time for the Devil to pen (type??) a review of the demo from the strangely named Move Zig (from the classic Japanese shoot'em up Zero Wing which, according to my my well thumbed copy of the Urban Dictionary is commonly used to ask people to move quickly usually for great justice!!). Maybe it's taken so long because it's been difficult to put the band and their music into a neat box, hard to categorise, hard to pigeon hole which us journo bloggers hate.
And what is it that makes Move Zig so hard to pigepon hole? It's probably because, like a roving gang of magpies with musical taste, like a gang of kids at a Woolies Pick 'n Mix counter, they have rummaged through the music of the last thirty years and taken the bits that appeal to them most. Dexys Midnight Runners' violins... check, Prefab Sprout's sweet female backing vocals ... check, Muse's loud and crunchy guitars... check, China Crisis' hooks and melodies...check, Shellac's unconventional song structures... check, and that's just the first two tracks!!! Move Zig don't treat these bands as influences they treat them more like artist Bill Woodrow treated the rubbish he found in dumps, something to use to create something new, something unique, something extraordinary. The closest I can get to a category that they could fit into is Progcore if any of the Devil's readers have a better description then please email me I'd love to hear it.
Mature, melodic, melodramatic and almost mathematically precise Move Zig are admiringly out of step with their peers already sounding like themselves rather than the sum of their influences.
