Marc Bolan - It Was 30 Years Ago Today
It was exactly 30 years ago today the Marc Bolan shuffled off his mortal coil, two weeks before his 30th birthday and less than a mile from his Putney home (a special note for those who like to hark back to the good old days of the 70s his home was immediately looted!).
A series of events is taking place this weekend to commemorate the life and music of the glam rock icon. A memorial ceremony this afternoon at Golders Green Crematorium, in London, is expected to attract up to 500 people from across the world, while a special musical tribute event is being held later at a nearby nightclub. A memorial concert featuring, among others, Marc Almond, Tony Visconti and his son Rolan, took place at the Shepherd's Bush Empire last night, and greatest hits collection will be released tomorrow .
Although the Devil has mixed feelings about Marc because he acted like a real dick to the Devil's hero John Peel, discarding him like a used syringe as soon as he found fame and fortune (see Peel's biography The Margrave of the Marshes for more on the Peel/Bolan relationship) I can't deny his genius. The music he left behind still glitters with stardust and oozes sexuality all these years later and his death was a sad loss for the world of music.

Why do the good ones always go first? It's a shame more people in America aren't familiar with his work. Thanks for spreading the word.
Oxhorn,
So true the good do die young. I'm surprised that Bolan was not bigger in the US given how huge he was in the UK.
