Indonesia Rocks 3 - The Final Selection

Tonight is the last post in the short series on the Indonesian music scene. It's been an interesting detour from the usual UK/US bands that have dominated the Devil's blog since it was launched last August. What I've found most exciting and exhilarating about the Indonesian scene is that it seems a lot less concerned about appearing 'cool' or having the right haircut and is therefore much more fun. While there is an element of mimicking the US and UK scenes there is a refreshing variety which is reflected in the three bands tonight. The bands also have some fabulous names such as the first band up tonight...

70 Orgasm Club
Genre: Rock / Funk / Psychedelic

If you're looking for some crunching, funking, bass thumping, freaky, kinky, raw grooving, fast moving, psychedelic soul then get on down to the winner of the worlds best named band for 2007, 70s Orgasm Club. This is the sound of Funkadelic playing the Jimi Hendrix back catalogue at the gates of heaven with Bob Marley . Listening to 70s Orgasm Club is like having the worlds best party in your head.

The second of our Indonesian bands to watch are...

Olive Tree
Genre: Powerpop / Pop / Big Beat

In September 2003 Clare Grogan (Altered Images) sound-alike Kiki (Songwriter/Pianist) asked drummer Bez (no relation to the Happy Mondays freaky, maracas player of the same name I'm sure) to form Olive Tree. After a difficult birth when they lost 50% of the band (due no doubt to musical differences) the Olive Tree sound, which is akin to Clare Grogan and Mew raiding the Dresden Dolls wardrobe, emerged. With their self funded, self promoted and self distributed debut album released in December 2006 receiving airplay from radio stations across Indonesia and a tour underway Olive Tree are ripe for crossover success in the UK & US.

and the final band on our short trip to Indonesia are...

Everybody Loves Irene
Genre: Electronica / Trip Hop / Down-tempo

Diehard fans of the now-defunct Portishead take notice. For those craving more music by that legendary Bristol-based band, a superb alternative has formed in the city you least expected. Yet these five college students from Jakarta do more than just pay homage. The group says it plays music "for times when the ecstasy wears off and the tingle becomes a chill," a kind of "dance noir for those too world-weary to move." True, this trip-hop outfit is more suitable to rainy days and Mondays than a pick-me-up jam before going out on Friday night, but that's what makes them so unique on the Jakarta scene.
