Former editorial assistant at Wired Peter Arcuni, formed Birdmonster in 2004 with childhood friend, bassist Justin Tenuto, guitarist and pianist David Klein and drummer Zach Winter. Quite the entrepreneur Arcuni got the bad a number of gigs by offering to fill in opening act slots and courting Internet radio stations, like San Francisco's BagelRadio.com. This lead to the bands first high-visibility show, opening for Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

The band released their self-titled EP in December 2004 with a number of critics comparing their shrapnel bursts of guitar and harshly intoned vocals to Lonesome Crowded West-era Modest Mouse. In 2007 you can still hear traces of Modest Mouse but Birdmonster are now painting on a much broader canvas and their sound has progressed to take in, Built To Spill, The Libertines (minus the Albion fixation, the cockney accents, Kate Moss, and the self destructive urges), The Replacements and Talking Heads.

Birdmonster may be saddled with an horrendous name but they prove that just as you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover you also shouldn't judge a band by it's name.
